Additional testimony was offered,show-in- g the lunacy of Francis McFarland. One witness testified that McFarland was always devoted to his wife and children, and continually talked about them. His children and wife used to visit witness, and when McFarland would visit him, he would often time start up crying: "Oh! my G ,thsy have taken them away; I would rather be in my grave than not have my children." For months he had complained greatly of his head, and when he met the witness in November, his eyes were rolling wildly, hts mouth twitched, and witness asked him why he did not let the matter rest. He exclaimed: "Rest! there is no rest for mo this side side of the grave." Prisoner said he hadbeeu offered $10,,000 and a consulship to settle "the suit against Richardson. In conversation the prisoner was at all times wild and always on his family griof. He always spoke of his wife and children affectionately and said he would kill himself if he lost them. Numerous witnesses were introduced, who testified to similar actions, tending to show the lunacy or a high ntate of nervous excitement pf.thc prisoner, for aoine months before the murder. J. T. Taylor, who had been on terms of intimacy with the prisoner, testified that after a divorco had been obtained by his wife, McFarland came into his oihec in a perfect frenzy of excitement what do you think? and said, "My G My wife has pot a divorce and they have taken my children. 1 will kill myself; there is nothing for me to live for!" The eflorts of witness to calm him were in effectual. Witness said on one occasion, McFarland told him he had been otrered $10,000 and a consulate to give up his wile. Witness said: "McFarland, you are a fool. I would give up such a woman lor ten thousand cents. lie replied: "I would not give up my children for a consulate to the court of heaven." At the conclusion of this wit ness' testimony ths court adjourned. On Tuesday several witnesses gave testimony similar to the above. Letters were read from Mrs. Sinclair and Mrs Calhounto Mrs. McFarland, advising licr to leavo her huaband. subsequently, Mrs. Calhoun wrote, "We are so glad you left Mcrarland. At that place they have not tried fruit raising yet, but they intend to set out orchards, shade trees, etc. ere long. Insufficiency of water has been the drawback.
