His addition to the camp staff came as a surprise to everyone connected with it including Bingham High coach the clinic George biuga, director. ' , "I would never want to give the impression that I m using a "I didn't know what to say for a minute," ; Sluga continued. "Finally, I told him we would appreciate the help, but we could never afford to compensate him for what he was worth. 'That's 0kay he told me, 'just pay me minimum wage'." "Italy has the second best professional basketball league in the world," said Roberts. "They have a strong league and good players. I just felt it would be better to take the sure thing rather than wait and see here." In Italy, Fred played for Bologna "Latte Sole," which means "Milk of the Sun," according to Fred. He felt, personally, that he had a good year with the team, averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds a game, but apparently that wasn't good enough for the Italian sports press. "They have a different mentality - over there," he recalled, "they expect so much out of American players. We struggled as a team and if the team loses then it's your fault." Adding to his difficulties was his unfamiliarity with the language. He didn't speak Italian and his coach didn't speak English. Fortunately, another American player who'd been in Italy for a while, was able to act as a translator and Fred eventually acquired enough of a handle on the language to get by. Without question, his happiest moment during the visit to Italy was his marriage to his wife Penny. The couple had dated for a couple of years while at BYU and were engaged before Fred left for Italy. However, his team would never allow him enough time to come home and tie the knot. Eventually, they had to fly Penny to Italy to get the job ' Fred Roberts, shown here in 1977 action with the Bingham High Miners, will be joining the annual Bingham Youth Basketball Clinic. Fred recently completed his first season with the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA. He also spent a season playing ball in Italy. She didn't speak a word of Italian and Fred was often away from home on road trips. She attended all the home games, but even then there were anxious moments. "Italian basketball fans are really rowdy at times and would throw things out onto the court," she stated. "We always sat in the first few rows and could see it. I was really afraid Fred would slip on something and hurt himself. One time they had to hold up a game for 20 minutes because someone threw some smoke bombs on the court." Fred had originally been drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks, but soon after he heard the Bucks had acquired Dave Cowans and he knew his chances of. getting a spot were not good. That was one of the reasons he went to Italy. Later, he heard that he'd been traded to New Jersey. His break into the NBA came when Stan Albeck left his coaching spot at New Jersey to take over in San Antonio. Albeck knew Roberts from an tour of Europe he'd coached and was impressed with Fred's abilities. Fred was sent to San Antonio, tried out, and made the team. At San Antonio, Fred was usually the first forward off the bench, but he did start seven games and averaged 18 minutes of playing time per contest. He said the two biggest things he had to get use to were the speed and skill of NBA players and the heavy schedule of games. "The NBA is a faster game than any other I played in and everybody is a good player," he noted. "Also, we play as many as four games a week and that can be tiring, especially on the road."
