Or, maybe you have had it yourself, possibly even surgery. This is one organ that man can live without, and often has to. The gall bladder looks like a pear and is about 4 inches long and an inch or so wide. It lies on the underside of the liver below the lower right ribcage. The function of the gall bladder is to store and release bile when it is needed. Bile is a d liquid that is secreted by the liver and works like a detergent on grease. The body produces about a pint of bile a day but the gall bladder can only store about l10th of that amount. As digestion continues, the liquid food or chyme as it is called, leaves the green-colore- UPHOLSTERING HOUSE We Recycle Furniture. 5610111 Midvale 51 N. It is here that the bile from the gall bladder is released particularly if there is a presence of fat in the liquid. The bile breaks up the fat molecules so they can be absorbed further down the intestinal tract. The bile enters the gall bladder from the liver by way of ducts or small tubes. The gall bladder duct and the liver duct join to form the common bile duct. If there is an obstruction in these ducts due to stones, for instance, the bile is not allowed to flow properly. This pooling bile is absorbed into the blood stream results in yellowish which a discoloration of the skin and membranes, particularly of the lining of the eyes. The bile is normally excreted in the waste products, or feces. If there is a high concentration in the blood, the stools may become because they are lacking bile. a disease Cholecystitis, involving inflammation of the gall bladder, is most frequently associated with gall stones. The are and symptoms pain tenderness to touch under the right side of the ribcage accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Treatment generally involves removal of the gall bladder at some point in time. This is done both to remove the diseased gall bladder and to eliminate the risk of the stones moving into the duct causing obstruction with jaundice and possible infection in the liver. jaundice, clay-color- Enjoy carrots this year Did you know that 1984 is the year of the carrot? At least so it has been named by the National Whether Bureau. Garden or growing eating them, you can best in carrot quality the enjoy throughout the year, says Bill Varga, research horticulturist, Utah State University. Varga reminds that you can enjoy most success in growing carrots if you will select a variety of the type best suited to your garden soil. Choose from among the four basic shapes: d or pointed, stump rooted or blunt, cylindrical, and d ball shaped. The long varieties grow well in garden soil that is sandy or light and loose. For heavy or stony soils, you will do better with shorter varieties. The stump rooted or cylindrical types have performed best in the soil at the USU Farmington trials. The real proof of good garden-grow- n carrots comes in the eating. Varga lists five varieties grown at Farmington that rated highest in flavor tests. These are Pioneer Hybrid, Short 'N Sweet, Scarlet Nantes, Royal Cross Hybrid and Lance Hybrid. Certainly color also has something to do with carrot appeal. The same benefit was not found from popping vitamin pills. In fact, the council recommends against people taking large amounts of vitamin A pills. "Taking too much vitamin A can be dangerous," says Dr. Richard S. Rivlin, chief of the Division of Nutrition, New York of Hospital, and professor medicine, Cornell University Medical College. Citing the Nutrition Council recommendations, he said, "Excess amounts of this vitamin are not easily eliminated by the body. Rather, they tend to be stored in the body. If high levels of vitamin A build up in the body over time, they can cause a whole spectrum of unwanted effects ranging from skin problems to stomach upset to increased pressure inside the skull to liver disease." The council assures that you can gain the health benefits without the risk of those bad effects.
