It is most commonly seen in the aorta, the large artery leaving the heart, but can occur elsewhere in other bloodvessels. I had previously mentioned that the aorta is the main artery of the body. It is also the largest. It is approximately 3 cm. in diameter or a little over an inch around. From the heart it curves up in an arch and then down along the backbone and into the abdomen. From there it gives off branches to the arms, legs and digestive organs. It also has branches to the head. The aorta is extremely elastic, made up mostly of layers of elastic tissue that are able to withstand the pressure in the blood vessel. As you may recall, if the aorta were opened, blood would spurt five feet or higher due to this pressure. Dilatation in the artery can result from congenital weakness (abnormality present at birth), stretching in a particular area, trauma or from infection, arteriosclerosis which is the what normal is and FLOTATION WATER BEDS answer these questions and others many about the body in an understandable and informative way. This is not an advice column, however we do Nancy Wilferd, RN welcome your questions and comments. Send them in care of this newspaper, P.O. Box 128, Midvale, UL 84047. Recently the editor of the Sentinel Newspapers suffered a great loss with the death of his father, Mr Bill Landers. His. father died from complications of an aneurysm. This column I wish to dedicate to Jim and his family in memory of his father. ; An aneurysm (pronounced is defined as a saclike dilatation or pouching of the wall of an artery usually filled with , most . common cause. Aneurysms usually develop at a place in the artery that is not surrounded by skeletal muscle, such as in the abdominal cavity before the aorta reaches the legs. Aneurysms caused by arteriosclerosis usually develop after the age of 60 and occur more frequently in men than women. A deadly complication of an aneurysm is the possibility of with rupture resulting and hemorrhage possible death. The larger the aneurysm is the more likely it is to burst. Therefore, larger aneurysms are usually treated by surgical replacement of the affected part of the artery by artificial grafts. Smaller aneurysms which are less likely to rupture are often observed the by closely to watch for physician complications or increase in size.
