Show THE SENTINEL PaQ6 6 Thursday, April 12, 1984 The Earthen Vessel People want to know why the body acts and reacts as it does, and what is normal and abnormal. It is the Intention of this column to answer these 1 questions and others many about the body , in an underc y, . ) I standable and ;, informative way. This is not an advice column, however we do Nancy Wilferd,RN welcome your questions and comments. Send them in care of this newspaper, P.O. Box 128, Midvale, Ut. 84047. In the last few columns, we've been reading about glands that aid in digestion. These glands secrete their various substances when food is present in the stomach or intestines or when it is seen, smelled or imagined. The pancreas acts as a dual gland, meaning it is both exocrine and endocrine. As an endocrine gland, the pancreas secretes insulin which will be discussed with the topic of diabetes. As an exocrine gland, it has a system of ducts that allows the digestive juices to be secreted into the intestines. Hie pancreas is usually larger in men than women and weighs approximately 3 oz. It is between 6 to 9" long and about llk" wide. It is situated a little below and behind the stomach. Enzymes (chemicals) that aid in digestion are found in the pancreatic juice. These juices enter the duodenum (or beginning segment of the small intestine). The juice made by the pancreas, about a pint or more a r Jordan School District Lunch Menus day, contains several different enzymes which act on different types of food. One of, the enzymes similar to the one in the mouth, continues the digestion of starches, another one digests fat, another one breaks down protein. There is a continual secretion of pancreatic juice, however the presence of food in the stomach stimulates the pancreas to produce larger amounts. In addition to this, the presence of hydrochloric acid, protein and fat digestion products in the small intestine causes the mucous lining of the intestine to release a hormone into the blood called secretin. This hormone stimulates the pancreas to produce the enzymes that help digest the food. The secretion of the pancreatic juice continues for about 3 hours after a meal is eaten, or as the food moves from the upper part of the intestines to the lower part. The a most pancreas, important and vital gland, assists with digestion in the earthen vessel. Bill Armington, M.D., Consult. Monday Tuesday Elementary Elementary Carrot, Celery Cauliflower Veg. But, a hospital as sponsor is something new, at least to this area. Dr. Richard Jackson, a member of the staff at Alta View Hospital in Sandy, first came up with the idea while treating a patient who just happened to be a den leader. He mentioned it to her and that got the ball rolling. The result was Cub Pack 24, formed with the assistance of R.N. Deanne Madsen and director of nursing Marsha Stewart. Pack leaders include Marilyn Stolfa and her husband Dave. David Strand is the chairman of the pack committee. As its first community service project, the pack members put together some hand crafted artificial flower arrangements to be distributed to patients at Alta View. Those were to the presented hospital on Wednesday, April 4. Currently, Pack 24 has seven Cub Scouts, but the fledgling group is expected to continue to grow.
