Saliva, made up mostly of water, keeps the inside of the mouth moist and bathes the teeth constantly helping to keep them clean. A small amount of saliva is formed at a time but up to a quart or more may be secreted in one day. Much of this is formed when food is present in the mouth. Actually, anything pleasant or unpleasant in the mouth, such as a dentists' drill, will -- stimulate the glands.-t- o produce saliva. Just moving the cheeks and tongue will also produce saliva, as will seeing food it. or smelling Interestingly, moistening the food with saliva makes it possible for you to taste it. Food just doesn't taste right if your mouth is dry from a fever, for instance. Saliva also aids in wetting the lips and mouth for speaking. People who tend to speak at long lengths often need a glass of water handy because the supply of saliva isn't keeping up with the demand. Next week, we will continue our discussion of glands that aid digestion in the earthen vessel. Nancy J. Wilferd, R.N. Bill Armington, M.D., Consult Food needs to be digested so that it can be turned into a form the body can use to make muscle, fat, blood and all other body parts. Some of the glands that aid the body in the digestive process are called the salivary glands. This digestion begins in the mouth. There are three salivary glands on each side of the mouth. The ones we hear so much about are the glands which swell when a person gets ' the mumps. They are called the parotid glands. They, like the other glands, are connected to the mouth by small tubes through which saliva flows. Other salivary glands are found within the lower jaw and also under the tongue. Salivary glands secrete saliva which acts to lubricate and soften the food making it easier to swallow. This saliva contains a chemical known as an enzyme. Enzymes are so vital in the body that chemical reactions necessary for life could not take without them. For place instance, the enzyme present in the saliva begins the digestion of starchy foods by changing the into starch (carbohydrate) which are sugar particles simple .
