This blood flow is dependent on the efficiency of the beating heart and also the condition of the blood vessels that carry it. But how is this ?blOod being carried to every living cell?; ' There are three kinds of blood vessels: arteries, veins and capillaries. Arteries are vessels that carry blood away from the heart. These arteries branch into vessels of decreasing size called arterioles. They serve as distributors, carrying the blood to the capillaries. Veins serve as collectors returning the blood to the heart. They also have branches of decreasing size called venules. Since some of the veins in the lower extremities have to carry the blood against the force of gravity, they are equipped with valves. They close if the blood reverses its direction of flow, For instance, if you didn't have valves in your leg veins the blood would rush into your feet every time you stood up. Capillaries are microscopic vessels that carry blood from small arteries to small veins, that is, from arterioles to venules. The capillaries may seem like the most insignificant of the three kinds because of their very small size (ten of them together aren't any thicker than a strand of hair and laid end to end they would extend' 62,000 miles) however, they are the most important vessels functionally. The reason for this is because the exchange of oxygen and nutrients for carbon dioxide and wastes takes place in the entire The capillaries. ; Qckduk r; Utah Arts Festival seeks applications : . . ; n.
