Show THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, September 25, 1986 AS WE SEE IT Two Films TieHereFor 'Woofer Of The WeeM byMarkCartwright&KelliLidell Green Sheet Entertainment Critics Unspooling at theaters around town are two films which share the dubious honor of being woofers of the week. It's the first time that we've ever had a tie. "Codename: Wildgeese," from New World Pictures, boasts a cast starring Lewis Collins (?), Ernest Borgnine, Lee Van Cleef, and Klau Kinski in a film which could more accurately be titled Big Names: Lame Ducks. Collins plays the head of a team of merceneries who go into the triangle to destroy the drug operations that flouish there. His boss is portrayed by Ernest Borgnine, an Academy Award-winnin- g actor who should be slapped for the performance he gives. Borgnine is in the film for about 10 minutes and is so stiff, it appears he's just walking through his role which he could have phoned in. Lee Van Cleef as the helicopter pilot is around more than Borgnine, but the dialogue he's been given just doesn't give way to Van Cleef's considerable acting talents. Klaus Kin-sk- i, on the other hand, tries to make the best of a bad situation, but even . he can't save this mess which suffers form a lackluster script and poor direction with too many needless close-up- s of Collins. Codename: Wildgeese suckers you in with big names and reputations and then fails to deliver much of anything other than massive doses of boredom. Save your money. The other woofer is a much ballyhooed disappointment titled Shanghai Surprise, with the only ones to get shanghied are the patrons who plop their money down at the box office. Sean Penn, Hollywood's answer to John McEnroe, is a hustler booted off a boat and runs smack into Madonna, miscast as, would you believe, a missionary trying to obtain drugs for the patients in her care. The script sets the period as 1938 and probably would have worked with other actors, under control. Penn has proven his acting ability in other films and appears to be walking through his role, which is a shame. As for Madonna, a. k. a. Mrs. Sean Penn, she should immediately find an acting instructor capable of making silk purses. She not only isn't capable of carrying off a major film role, she isn't capable of crying with any conviction. "Shanghai Surprise is a complete waste of time, effort and money, hopefully not yours. On the video scene, there are more reasons to be upbeat especially with n the release of FX from films. FX is Hollywood shorthand for special effects. Bryan Brown is an FX master recruited by the government to make it appear that a government witness has been killed in order to keep that witness alive, reluctant to become involved at first, he finally agrees, completes the assignemnt successfully, then learns that he's to be terminated to assure there are no loose ends. . From then on it's the FX master against the agents out to kill him, which means that he pulls out all the stops keeping the film moving with brilliant special effects, action by the carload and a first class script backed up by a superb cast and crew. Maybe that's why his five-yea- r association with "Po Folks" restaurants has been such a congenial match. That, plus the fact his band is named "Po Folks" and once recorded a song called, you guessed it, "Po Folks." Anderson was in the area Thursvisit to the day as part of a day-lon- g chain's three Utah outlets, including the new one on 9400 South in Sandy. "After they (Po Folks) opened their first restaurant in 1981, 1 guess people kind of associated me with Po Folks," Anderson noted with a grin. "Which seems only natural, with the name of the band and the title of the song." Po Folks manager agreed and hired Anderson as a spokesman for the fledgling chain. Anderson started out as a spokesman for the group, but the longer he was associated with it, the more impressed he became. Eventually he became an investor and later a franchisee. Po Folks started out with 17 restaurants in four states and now has 175 in 26 states. All, by reports, are doing very well. Anderson said he's proud to have had a role in what has become the fastest growing restaurant chain in the country, though he put the major reasons for that growth down to having good people locally to run the show, a unique and friendly atmosphere and serving "food fast, not fast food." "We're a full service restaurant," Anderson stated. "But full service doesn't mean slow service. We try to make sure our visitors receive their meal in six to nine minutes." The atmosphere reminds one of, well, as Anderson put it, "eating at Grandma's house, not in the dining room, country music composer and has been honored as Male Vocalist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year (five times), among other awards. Some of his best known compositions include "City Lights," "Still," "Tips of My Fingers," and "Poor Folks." Anderson was the first country music artist to host a network game show and currently emcees a country music game show on the Nashville Network called "Fandango." He has also appeared on a number of variety and game shows and is executive producer of another Nashville Network show entitled "You Can Be A Star." d "Right now, my interests are d in music, in televiin the restaurant sion and one-thir- d business," he reported. "After, I leave here, I've got concerts in Georgia and Carolina over the next one-thir- iatrCt one-thir- couple of With days." 340SS. that, Anderson was up and running, busily circulating among the tables and customers, signing autographs, checking on the service and probably working up an enormous appetite in the process.
