It was caused by the falling of a big fan scene which contained eighty incandes cent electric lights. This scene was not in use at the time of the fire, but was set in the rear of the stage. The opening of the double doors in the rear of the stage created a draught which caused the big fan scene to topple over and break the incandescent bulbs. This produced a noise like an explosion. The stage hands deny that there was a calcium tank on the stage at the time of the fire. Coroner Treager has learned that each of the 180 drop scenes in the the ater was hung on new, oily, Manila rope. It is estimated that there were 750 lineal feet of this inflammable ma terial used in supporting the drop scenes and that it added fuel to the flames in the rigging loft. Lynch uflirmed that he knew nothing of the plan to escape and that the first thing he saw after the door Vas opened, was Majors and Waddell. 'Both had guns in their hands, and were pointing them at Jacobs, the latter being down. Lynch claims? he said: "I'll not have that! I won't stand for it." In answer to a direct question, he said that Jacobs had been kind to him and he would rather have been shot himself than to have seen Jacobs life taken, or to have seen him come to harm if he could prevent it. Would Not Kill to Escape. Attorney-GenerM. A. Breeden asked him this pointed question: "If you had a chance to escape now by killing some one. would you do so?" "No," aid Lynch emphatically. Then he was asked: "Why didn't you give yourself up after you were out?" "In all my wanderings," Lynch said, "I attacked no one, but could see nothing but death if I came back, and I stayed away as long as I could." Saved Life of "Wilckens. He said that during the uproar at the time of the outbreak he told Waddell, one of the convicts to not use his gun on Guard WTllckens.
