BOSSIER CITY, La. The- - 'i ; . i j . . '. LOS ANGELES ' . seem a little less dangerous that a - rattlesnake will warn you be fore it strikes by rattling its tail. Unfortunately, this isn't, completely- true. When a rattlesnake does rattle it's usually because it has become frightened. This makes it vibrate its tail rapidly which causes the rattles to strike together. But studies of the' rattle snake have shown that about 95 per cent of the time this snake give no warning at all before it strikes! , By the way, this idea of rattle snakes and other poisonous snakes "striking"; rather than biting, isn't quite true either. The fact is poisonous snakes both strike and bite, but, some snakes bite more than others. A snake with long fangs, like the rattlesnake, has its long hollow, movable fangs folded inward against the roof of the mouth when the mouth is closed. When the snake is about to strike, it opens its mouth, the fangs fall into biting position, and the snake lunges forward. As the fangs penetrate the skin,, the snake' bites. This bitting movement presses the poison glands so that the poison flows out, then, goes through the hollow teeth and into the wound. Other snakes, such as the cobra, which has shorter fangs, hold on for a time when they bite, and chew. This' chewing motion forces the poison into the wound. As a matter of fact, the cobra is a much fore dangerous 'snake than the rattlesnake. The cobra is more aggressive, more likely! to attack. And while a rattlesnake has more poison, the venom of the cobra is more deadly. People have been known to die from the bite of a cobra in less than an hour! J ) KM y MMb he. tJL IhCi VA VlbOft .
