Show A-15 The Park Record Wed/Thurs/Fri, March 29-31, 2017 A quick look at Utah news Governor vetoes bill, designates art Associated Press Dems welcome veto of bill that guts partisan limits SALT LAKE CITY — Gov. Gary Herbert’s Friday night veto of a bill that would have allowed him to pack about two dozen of boards and commissions with Republicans was a welcome surprise to Democrats. Democratic Rep. Brian King said Monday that he’s surprised but appreciative of the veto because there’s already too much one-party control in the deepred state. Republican Rep. Norm Thurston, the bill sponsor, says the GOP governor originally asked for the legislation because limits on how many board members can be from one political party make it tough to fill boards. Herbert said he vetoed the bill because he agreed to keep partisan limits on boards seen as more political, like the liquor board. Thurston says he’s disappointed in the veto. Legislative leaders have not yet started polling lawmakers to gauge interest in overriding the veto. Utah’s Spiral Jetty to become state work of art SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s governor has signed a bill that designates the iconic “Spiral Jetty” sculpture on the shore of the Great Salt Lake an official state work of art. On Saturday, Republican Gov. Gary Herbert approved the legislation recognizing the 1,500-foot long, 15-foot wide black basalt rock formation that juts out in a counterclockwise spiral about 90 miles north of Salt Lake City. Some lawmakers have spoken out against the proposal, questioning why the state should honor a sculpture made by an artist who is not from Utah. Many consider the Jetty, which in some years becomes submerged in water, one of the most significant sculptures in American art. Utah governor signs medical marijuana research bill SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s governor signed a bill that allows research into the risks and benefits of medical marijuana. On Saturday, Republican Gov. Gary Herbert approved the legislation, after lawmakers shied away from passing a broad medical marijuana program during the recently completed session. The proposal from Republican Rep. Brad Daw of Orem has been endorsed by the Utah Medical Association, which says more study needs to be done on the drug before the state approves its broader use as a medicine. Medical marijuana advocates in Utah say they are planning to try to get an initiative on the November 2018 ballot that would allow the drug to be used for treatment. Utah Jazz host 1997 Finals team for 20-year reunion SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Jazz hosted members of the 1997 Finals team last week for a 20-year reunion. Hall of Fame coach Jerry Sloan, Hall of Fame point guard John Stockton, Bryon Russell, Greg Ostertag and others were in attendance. The game was scheduled against the New York Knicks so coach Jeff Hornacek, who was a member of the team, could participate. The Jazz have retired Hornacek’s No. 14. Hall of Famer Karl Malone had a conflict and did not attend, but a video message featuring Malone played on the scoreboard. The festivities included a dinner the night before the game, media sessions the day of and a halftime ceremony. The players received plaques at halftime. The Jazz advanced to the Finals off a game-winning 3-pointer from Stockton to beat the Houston Rockets in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals. They lost to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in six games in the NBA Finals. This brief was written by AP sports writer Kareem Copeland Utah unemployment rate lingers at 3.1 percent SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s unemployment rate held steady last month a 3.1 percent. The state Department of Workforce Services said Friday that February’s unemployment rate means about 47,500 residents were unemployed that month but looking for work. The national unemployment rate fell last month to 4.7 percent. Workforce Services’ Chief Economist Carrie Mayne says Utah’s economy is operating near what’s considered full employment. UTA ridership dips, leading to smaller bonuses for workers SALT LAKE CITY — Lower gasoline prices last year meant fewer people took Utah Transit Authority buses and trains, leading to smaller bonuses for UTA administrators. The Salt Lake Tribune reported that UTA ridership dropped 2.16 percent with 45.57 million boardings in 2016. The dip means the authority received about 5.5 percent less fares than budgeted for the year, collecting $50.5 million instead of an expected $53.3 million. The news comes as the UTA board calculates bonuses for the year. Board members allocated bonuses based on achievements throughout the year. Executives determined the agency met 77.7 of its goals, so it will pay out 77.7 percent of available bonus money. The average bonus will be about $1,224. 11’ 4’ BamBoo Lounge Wear neW LoWer prices CaP sleeve shiRt - $6.00 long Pants - $7.50 tank toP - $6.00 shoRts - $5.00 Monday – Saturday 9:30 am – 6:30 pm | Sunday 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm 1675 Redstone Center Dr, #120, Park City • (435)575-0778 Subscribe today!
