This is a 40 minute gate-togate scenic tour of the Heber Valley. Passengers must be able to climb a ladder into the front and aft sections. The B-25J Mitchell was named after General Billy Mitchell, a famous Army Air Corps general of the 1920s and 1930s. It proved to be one of the best weapons and was possibly the most versatile aircraft of WWII. Heavily armed, it was utilized for high- and low-level bombing, strafing, photo reconnaissance, submarine patrol, and a fighter. It’s most distinguishing role was in the historic raid over Tokyo in 1942 by the Doolittle Raiders. The B-25J saw duty in ever combat area flown by the Dutch, British, Chinese, Russian, Australian, and U.S. forces. By 1947 there were only a few hundred B-25s remaining that performed a variety of training, reconnaissance, and support roles. Civilian use also included utility, transport, and agriculture duties. Maid in the Shade was manufactured at the North American Aviation plant in Kansas City and delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force on June 9, 1944. She served her last wartime duty with the 319th Bomb Group, 437th Squadron at Serraggia Airbase, Corsica. There she was assigned Battle No. 18. The plane flew 15 combat missions over Italy between Nov. 4 and Dec. 31, 1944. The majority of the targets were railroad bridges. She was fully restored by the Arizona Wing of the CAF over a 27 year period. The public can help celebrate Maid in the Shade’s 73rd birthday on June 9 at our Swing Dance Party 6-10 p.m. at the Heber City Airport. 1942 Boeing PT-17 Stearman Old Salty People can enjoy 20 thrilling minutes above the beautiful Heber Valley including spectacular views of Mt. Timpanogos, Sundance, and the Provo River -$275. Light aerobatics optional. Stearman aircraft were used during WWII as basic trainers for all branches of the military. Approximately 1000 remain in the air today. Most are personally owned. Stearman are open cockpit aircraft made of fabric, wood, steel, and aluminum. Old Salty served as a WWII trainer in the Army Air Corps. After the war it was purchased and used as a crop duster. In 1980 it was fully restored. Then, while on a cross country flight to California in Aug.1986, she suffered a catastrophic crash in the trees of the Oquirrh Mountains west of the Salt Lake Valley. The Utah Wing of the CAF recovered the wreckage and she was completely rebuilt, taking her maiden flight in 1988. Since then, hundreds have flown in her; thousands have touched her or sat in her. She has thrilled crowds at countless airshows, flown over numerous parades and cemeteries and honored veterans of all military branches.
