Some families opt to leave town. Others stay put, which is why the Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter offers the spring break camp. The second camp of its kind,, offered to kids in grades one through five, will run from Monday, April 10, to Friday, April 14, said Kathleen Veeder, the noprofit’s education director. “The camp was created in response to community requests,” Veeder told The Park Record. “We had parents who told us their kids were home for a week while their friends were out of town. So, we put together the camp so kids will feel like they are on vacation, even though they are staying in Park City.” Registration is open and the cost for one day is $55. “If parents register their children for all five days, they’ll get a 20 percent discount,” Veeder said. “So, they’ll get one day free.” Drop off is at 8:45 a.m. and camps end at 4 p.m. Each day will have a theme with a STEAM twist. “STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math,” Veeder said. The themes are as follows • Monday, April 10: Journey to the Center of the Earth. “We will learn about the various layers of the Earth,” Veeder said. “We will start from the inside center and work our way out and talk about plate tectonics.” The day will include craft sessions about these different layers, and there will be activities about volcanoes. “We’ll even talk about layers of the atmosphere and design some rockets,” Veeder said. • Tuesday, April 11: Around the World “This camp is focused more on different environments we can find around the world and campers will learn about different habitats and different ecosystems,” Veeder said. The children will also get to make their own story necklaces. “They will design their own beads that will go on the necklace and the beads will make up a story that they can share,” Veeder said. In addition, campers will make their own biome tubes. “They will learn about the different biomes of the Earth and pick one to make,” Veeder said. “They’ll select some plastic animals and plants that they might see in [their chosen] biome and created a three-dimensional ‘ISpy’ game.” The camp will also address environmental issues. “We’ll have discussions about land and water pollution, climate change and things like that,” Veeder said. • Wednesday, April 12: Small Wonders “We’re excited for this camp because it will focus on the EcoCenter’s new exhibit about insects that will open on April 1,” Veeder said. “But we will actually talk about all kinds of small wonders including insects and event germs. “We’ll show how the human body protects itself from antigens, and discuss how the blood is one of the defense systems in the body.” Some of the activities of the day include making microscope slides. • Thursday, April 13: Swaner Stories “This camp will take an anthropological view on things around us,” Veeder said. “Campers will go through different topics and excavate their own archaeological sites, and put RESTAURANT GUIDE PARKRECORD together pieces of broken pottery like how archaeologists do.” The camp will include the history of the Swaner Preserve. “We’ll go into the previous uses of the land and what it has become,” Veeder said. “Then we’ll take a walk out to the Wallin Barn that sits on the Preserve where the campers will get a chance to explore that area.” Kids will also create a time capsule. “The capsule will tell future spring-break campers the importance of the Swaner Preserve,” Veeder said. “We’ll store it at the EcoCenter so other people can see it.” • Friday, April 14: Creature Scene Investigators “We will turn the campers into detectives and their assignment is to find out what animals have been doing in the wild,” Veeder said. “We’ll investigate a nature crime scene. There will be clues of maybe an animal that was attacked by a predator and kids will have to figure out what happened.” The day will also include geocaching and a live animal presentation. “All of our activities are hands-on and focus on what kids would really be interested in,” Veeder said. “It will be a very busy week, because we want the kids to have a good time, but also learn something.” Each child is required to bring their own sack lunches with a reusable water bottle each day. “We will, however, provide a snack in the morning and another in the afternoon,” Veeder said. Camps can facilitate up to 16 kids per day. “We did this last year and didn’t fill them up, but we do encourage people to sign up earlier than later,” Veeder said.
