The majority of the people throughout the state are In favor . of bettering the appearance of their communities and make them more beautiful. Indeed a great deal of effort has been put forth in this direction in many sections of the stateby the people and assistance has been rendered through the extension service of. the " Utah Agricultural college. A few timely hints concerning tree pruning may be apropos at this season. It has been observed that many street trees and other ornamental trees have been pruned, and undoubtedly this work has been done to the .best of the ability of those undertaking the work. A few suggestions, however, in regard to the correct methods to apply in pruning might be of benefit in improving the condition. In removing a large limb from a tree it is advisable to cut it off first three to four feet from the trunk of the tree by making a cut with- - the saw on the Under side of the limb; then cut from above until the limb falls.,' The remaining stump should then be cut off close to the tree In one clean cut If this method Is followed it will avoid stripping the bark from the tree which may otherwise occur. This stripping of the par uuy oniy yreaenia an unatracuve appearance put m aein. mental to the tree itself. It is not from lack of interest that people are prompted to use axes for tree pruning, It is simply lack of better judgment. 7lf wSPPM Wl. JUc'iiietHolijiblL discontinued since information on the subject is easily available and 'is given gratis by simply appfymg for it. Good judgment in this matter m ahaolutely necessary if we are to make improvement in 'the appearance in our communities. In connection with 'this, would suggest that where treesare to, be removed, to dig around them, and cut the roots so that no stump is left in the ground. It has been observed in some places in the state that trees have been cut down, leaving a stump three to four feet above the ground. This' unsightly stump, which takes years to decliy, could very easily have been removed at the time the trees were felled. - "- -j . . e&L. Sidney GowicgU . 'JllSJ -- 1 h rr- - '.." .
