The atmosphere has completely changed throughout the Institutional walls. At the present time a number of elderly people are making their home there from far off southern counties. The average number of patients in the institution each month Is between and forty. The feeling of "county honor" thirty-fivinstead of "county charge" well reflects In the satisfied, expressions from the many relatives and friends who visit dally. During the past eighteen months the county commissioners, the county physician and the matron have cooperated very closely in furthering improvements in this the largest Utah county institution, yet at the same time a high efficiency has been maintained and costs of operation decidedly lowered below 1920. The following points of record will be appreciated by all citizens interested in our economic ad- THE SPEED CRAZE GROWS. When he was secretary of the Mississippi Valley Apple tJrowers' association he urged the setting aside of one day in October as a special day when he should pay tribute to the American apple. In 1905 a number of horticultural organizations as well as the International Apple Shippers' association joined with Mr. Handley and named the third Tuesday in October as Apple day. The distinction Ls impor- Ill - neurasthenia." this day was being celebrated from Maine to California, from Rochester to Baltimore and Galveston. At the 1920 convention of the International Apple Shippers' association National Apple day was changed to the last day in October Hallowe'en, as it is known to us all. The principle of the celebration is to give publicity to the greatest fruit in the world, to widen its distribution, to increase its consumption, to contribute hereby to the maintenance of our productive orchards, to bring wealth, happiness and good cheer to the people of this entire nation. The United States is the greatest apple grower. All the other countries on the globe do not produce as many apples as the United States. England, France, Germany, Russia and many other parts of Europe have large numbers of apple trees but most of the fruit does not enter commercial channels. Canada now produces about 15 per cent as many apples as are grown in the United States. Nowhere else in the world has commercial apple growing reached the position of prominence that it holds in this country and it seems probable that the United States will retain its prominence, in this respect, for many years to come. ' e his hod. People began to gulp their meals, where eating had once been a delightful ceremony, enjoyable, lingering on each morsel of luscious food. Slow, dragging g sentimental ballads gave way to jazz music. Dancing became faster. Life all around was geared to higher speed. And, with the process, came a nervous tension, result of noise and rush. The speed mania of course, has been less noticeable on farms and in small towns than in the big cities. But they, too, are catching the fever. Mr. Farmer wants his news by radio, can't wait until the rural postman flashes by in his overheated flivver. Even the once plodding fisherman, who formerly purred with contentment as he rowed to his favorite bass pool, now squirms like a lad with St. Vitus dance, until he gets a motor to hustle up his boat, also reels. Show people how to move faster, how to shave off a second or two, and name your own price. The auto couldn't keep up with the public appetite for speed, so the airplane is being developed. Some experts assert that airplanes soon will make 1,000 miles an hour. Sounds probable. But is this frantic rush really making life more happy? What are we all so afraid of, that we are hurrying to get past it? It's a mad rush, by "bundles of nerves," with no destination. In the long run, is it .any more important than if all rabbits learned how to leap twice as far and take two leaps where only one was leaped before? If any of the lower animals suddenly speeded up and began rushing about, as we humans have in the last two decades, scientists would cry, "Wave of insanity social auto-hearse- Man?
