The voluntary increase by the United States Steel corporation of 20 per cent in the wages of its army of employes is convincing proof that that vast aggregation of capital has faith in the return of prosperity. The steel mills usually are the last to shut down when depression comes, because accumulated orders keep them running for some time afterward, and they are also the last to "resume when business revives, because orders for steel are withheld until the'demand becomes urgent. The wage increase in the steel industry signifies that a business boom is coming and that neither strikes at home nor economic troubles abroad can head off prosperity. Steel making is the best barometer of general business conditions existing. -- - Dream Klngwas sitting op Ma favorite cloud," said Daddy "When along came Witty Witch. Tht FORTY YEARS OF ELECTRICITY. h It seems impossible of belief that but 40 years have elapsed since Thomas A, Edison's dream of utilizing electricity for commercial and home purposes became a reality. Yet it was September 4, 1884, that Edison, haggard and almost "exhausted from months of ceaseless effort, gave the signal which turned on the current, in the first electrical central station in the world, and that date marks the inception of an industry which has revolutionized the social and industrial lif e of the civilized worldT From the first central station, which was and still is located at 257 Pearl street, New York, this industry has expanded to 5,654 operating companies, serving In October, 1882, the Pearl steet 14,500 communities. station had 59 customers. In 1922, there are 10,375- ,200 customers, of whom 8,467,600 take residential light service. The output of the first station to its original 59 customers was 64.2 kilowatts. The output of electrical energy in America m 1921 was 43,100,000,000 kilowatts. Four hundred lamps were turned on in New York City September 4, 1884. Now a single unit in the new Hell Gate station in the metropolis, with a capac ity of 37,500 kilowatts, will light 750,000 lamps. The realization of Edison's dream formed the basis of the wonderful industrial development which has made the United States the wealthiest and most powerful nation, for his idea, developed and perfected,, gave an impetus to our industrial and commercial life that has placed us in the vanguard of the world's commerce and trade. Forty years ago the product of the first electric station was used for lighting purposes alone. Today electric energy is utilized for light and heat and power, in factory and farm, in office and home. It has become a commonplace of everyday life and is as necessary, practically, as the clothes we wear or the food we eat. A number of the men who labored with Edison in what the public then thought va9 a dangerous and visionary experiment are today the leaders in the electrical industry in this country an industry employing ' hundreds of thousands of persons and representing a capital investment of nearly five billion dollars. j f M ICHELIN MTH THS IN MJHICH ' -urn .....u TOUCH f CHXETTE SAFETY RA2CR CO..
