A highly controversial bill proposed in the Utah Legislature which would consolidate all city and town libraries in Salt Lake county into the county library system drew fire from several sources this week. Mrs. Ruth Vine Tyler, librarian of the Salt Lake county system, corrected several fallacies in the proposal with a letter to Mayor J. Bracken Lee and Salt Lake City commissioners. AKTIU'K IUSIIOP. chairman of the Murray City Library, voiced his strong disapproval of the proposal and said his board members were staunchly opposed to merging the Murray facilities with any others. Mayor Henry Beckstead of Midvale, chairman of the County Library System, expressed considerable opposition to the bill and said he would fight to kill it in the Legislature. Mayor Lee has been generally conceded to have instigated the measure in which it was asserted "city property owners pay a tax supporting both the city I ii ' 'JL 000 Tl j I Buy it with Brinton's plus GEs Most Service .. . . IN her strongly-worded letter, said to Mayor Lec: "Is it possible you did not know that Salt Lake City residents do not pay one cent toward the County library system and have never done so in the 21 years that the county library has been in existence?" Continuing, Mrs. Tyler added there is no overlapping or duplicate taxation on the city residents for county library service. Only property owners in Granite and Jordan school districts are taxed for the county library and (service is returned to them!" The county librarian set the record straight concerning the size of the mill levy as well: "The maximum legal levy for county libraries, according to Utah law. is one mill only, not a as reported in the newspapers." SHE WAS complimentary to tho local library, writing: "There is only one unaffiliated, independent library in the county, namely Murray City, which operates efficiently and well under the laws of Utah and has done so for many years". "I don't believe county residents would be very enthusiastic about having their library taxation doubled at a time when the building of the Salt City structure is so imminent." she added. "In the future, however, it might be necessary that this maximum of one mill be raised to care for the fast-groing county library system." Also speaking for the Murray City board was J. M. Cornweil said: "I believe Mayor 1'e's who last week completed over two years us Its chairman. He proio.snl is entirely unfair and it simply constitutes anoihcr on the part of Salt MUe City to Kiddle the rest of the county with a burden the city has proved itself unable to carry.
