Woodruff, fourth president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daSaints, was born at Farmington, now Avon, Hartford county, Connecticut, on March I, lSi)7,and was the youngest of trtree children. He came of along-livestock. His great grandfather, Josiah Woodruff, lived to the age of 100 years, and his grandfather, Eldad Wocdruff, also attained a ripe old age. In youth and early manhood Wilford assisted his father in his business of a flour miller, and later conducted a sim ilar business on his own account. In 183-he purchased a farm and saw-minear Richmond, Oswego county, N. Y',, and settled there. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daSaints in 1834, and in May of that year accompanied Joseph Smith, the prophet, and his little baud to Missouri. In 1834 he was ordained priest and went on a mission to Arkansas, and Kentucky, and in May, 1837, he commenced a second missionary tour, this time visiting Maine and Fox islauds. April 2rt, 1830, he was elevated to the rank of Bpostle at Far West, Mo. In August following he went to England on a miesion, and established the first branch of the He re Mormon church in London. turned to Nauvoo in 1841, and two years later was again laboring at a missionary in the eastern states, but returned to Nauvoo on hearing of the assassination of Joseph Smith, the prophet.
