There's a chill in the air, the last leaves have fallen and it's time to dig out the snow shovels. It won't be long before the C71 ground is covered with a thick blanket of Mother Nature's best snow. Snow. Songs and poetry have been written about it, snowmen are built with it and people love to ski on it. But, there is a down side if you're walking, driving or running an air base. Sensible people take sensible precautions to minimize the hazards. Two sections of the 2849th Civil Engineering Squadron are responsible for snow removal on Hill AFB. The grounds shop is responsible for clearing snow from the common sidewalks. The pavements and equipment shop is responsible for clearing the airfield, base roads and parking lots. Priorities are established for snow removal with the airfield first and primary roads second. Once these critical pavements have been cleared, snow removal on secondary roads and parking lots begins. Building occupants are responsible for clearing snow and ice from doorsteps, landings, porches, walks, driveways, fire hydrants and catch basins in their respective areas. The respective area is defined as from the building to adjacent streets and halfway to the adjacent buildings. In most cases, this responsibility is delegated to the building managers. To be prepared for the snow season, there are several steps that building managers should take to ensure that they are prepared to deal with the snow. Snow shovels should be serviceable. g chemicals should be purchased. In the past, calcium chloride has been used as a however, it causes deterioration of concrete and may kill the grass adjacent to the sidewalk. It is recommended that urea be ordered instead.
