Show NEWS BRIEFS Oufpalient deductible starts over The CHAMPUS deductible for the new fiscal year began on Oct. 1. For services CHAMPUS patients receive from Oct. 1, 1991, through Sept. 30, 1992, most will pay the first $150 (for one person) or the first $300 (for a family) of allowable outpatient medical bills. The only exceptions are the eligible family members of active-dut- y military sponsors in the pay E-below. of or These families will pay an angrade nual outpatient deductible of $50 for one person or $100 for the whole family. CHAMPUS claims processors keep track of claims sent in for outpatient care, until the deductible has been met. Families who have other insurance that pays all or part of their outpatient bills must attach to their CHAMPUS claims copies of the other policy's statement which shows how much it paid, along with copies of itemized bills. This is important because the amount other health insurance pays on these claims can be credited toward your CHAMPUS annual outpatient deductible. If members of the service family receive care in more than one state, and send claims to more than one CHAMPUS claims processor, they should be sure that all processors to whom they send CHAMPUS claims know when all or any part of the family's deductible has been paid for the fiscal year. 4 The way to do this is to mail the CHAMPUS explanation of benefits form that is sent by one claims processor to any other processor to whom a claim is sent at the time a claim is filed with the other processor. The BOB will tell the other processor how much the family has paid toward satisfying the deductible for the year. Recertify vehicle registration tags The Pass and Registration Office is reminding employees that their vehicle passes may need to be recertified if they will expire in December 1991. The year tab on the base vehicle registration is issued simultaneously with the base vehicle registration decal when the vehicle is initially registered on base. Nov. 8, 1991 Seminar clarifies life insurance on, it is the registrant's responsibility to keep the year tab current as long as the vehicle remains registered on base. Vehicle registration must be recertified no later than December of the year shown on the year sticker (AF Form 2219). When an existing tab is due to expire, the owner should go to the Pass and Registration Office in Bldg. 1219 to recertify the vehicle registration and obtain a tab for a new year. If you have questions, call Ext. From-the- n Choosing a life insurance that is financially sound is the subject of a seminar Tuesday at the Family Support Center (Bldg. 308N). The seminar w ill run p.m. "The types of life insurance sold by insurance companies have multiplied," said Trent Searle, personal financial management program manager. "The choices are more complicated than just choosing between whole life and term insurance." Searle said today's insurance policies are geared to meeting the needs of a diverse population that has become increasingly sophisticated in making financial decisions. "While the variety of insurance products may create some confusion among consumers, the more options consumers have, the better their chances of purchasing a policy that meets their family's specific needs," he said. 6-- 8 iVolkstrauertag at Fort Douglas In cooperation with the Utah American Legion, a German Day of National Mourning, 15 H.IItop Times (Volkstrauer-tag)- , is scheduled at the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery, Nov. 17, at 9:45 a.m. The ceremony will be held at the German Memorial Monument to honor the victims of both world wars who are buried in the Fort Douglas Cemetery and the victims of war and despotism throughout the world. The general public is invited to attend. Catastrophic cap begins again The limit, or cap, on how much service families will have to pay for CHAMPUS-coveremedical bills in a fiscal year begins again on Oct. 1. The cap is $1,000 for active-uutfamilies, and for all other CHAMPUSor CHAMP-eligibl$10,000 families. The cap helps protect families from catastrophi-callhigh medical expenses. It applies to the amount of money needed to meet the family's ans nual deductibles for outpatient care, and for both inpatient and outpatient care, based on CHAMPUS-allowablch irges for covered care received in any one fiscal year. When a family reaches the cap in a fiscal year, CHAMPUS then pays all additional allowable costs for covered care for the rest of that fiscal year. Bills for care not covered by CHAMPUS or charges beyond those CHAMPUS determines to be reasonable, or allowable, are not capped; they must be paid in full by family members or their sponsors. Likewise, costs paid by families under CHAMPUS' program for the handicapped are not counted toward the cap.
