Everyone Ignores yield sign I live off base by the truck gate and I 2t often make a left turn past the trucl: gate f to go to Clearfield, There is a yield sign posted there for people leaving the base, but they don't yield. One of these days someone is going to be broadsided there. Could we get a guard down there to put a stop to this problem? AHI I asked the security police to investigate your Action Line, and you are correct. The yield sign is clearly visible and drivers are required to yield. The security police will have patrols monitor the area and cite violators. Many bases foster excellent community relations by providing areas near the end of runways where people can go to sit down and enjoy watching the jets fly. Would it be possible to open up such an area at the south end of the runway? There's unused space there, and it would be great (or community relations. you for your suggestion. However, yi" Thank the unused section of land you refer to is actually part of the airfield safety clearance zones. I appreciate your concern for good community relations and, indeed, a visitor observation area should promote good community relations. For this purpose, we are planning a follow-opark at Hill AFB Museum near the Roy Gate. The the will be furnished by next spring and will park provide a great opportunity to view aircraft operations, together with Air Force history. n Policy on wearing desert BDUs i What is the policy on wearing desert tie Dress Uniforms? When we were in the Middle East, we were told explicitly that we could not wear them stateside, yet I see many people wearing them, even some who didn't deploy. Is it all right to wear them, and if it isn't, why is it being allowed? Bat-vLE- Jl The base commander has authorized cer-Jr- l tain Air Force Specialty Codes or units to wear the Desert BDUs based on work at the range or in the desert, specific TDYs or their Air mission. Air Force Regulation Center-Hil- l AFB Supplement 1, paraLogistics state that, "Personnel assigned to graphs the following organizations are authorized to wear the Desert BDU: a. Det. 8, 1365th Audiovisual Squadron; b. 2701st Explosive Ordnance Division (AFSC: 4054B and 464X0); c. 2849th Security Police Squadron (AFSC: 811XX and 81XX)." Wear of desert BDUs by any other personnel assigned to Hill AFB is not authorized, and should not be permitted unless a new category is approved by the base commander. If you have further questions, please call personal affairs at Ext. 7236772104. en m Standardize speed limits I got a speeding ticket coming into the base. On the way into the base the speed limit is 25 miles per hour, but it is 30 mph on the way out. Why? I would also like to know why the security policeman waited until he got to the liquor store to pull me over if I was in violation coming into the base. Recently Oct. 4, 199? Ogden I fJt When I was outside the consolidated base personnel office during reveille recently, I was appalled by the actions of some of the people, including military and civilians, who were just walking around while reveille was being played. I think people need to be reminded that reveille is not just something that is done at the end of the duty day. It's also to pay respect to the flag. Could you see that people are reminded of proper conduct during that time. 1 J""i L Gtn. Dolt W. Thompson Jr. commander ALC Kudos I have a kudos for Linda Wallace and JoAnn Pinney, who work in the cafeteria in Bldg. 849. They do a good job and I appreciate everything they do. I have a late lunch and the grill is usually closed, but they are always real eager to help me and make sure I get something to eat. I'd just like to say thanks because it is real pleasant to go up and talk to them and some of the others who work there. They always do a good job. Keep up the good work and thanks. . Restaurant management and staff at the Den in Bldg. 849 appreciate your comments. Food service industry rewards are often few. Customers' appreciative words can and often do make for a nicer day. Again, thank you and we look forward to providing you with continued excellent service. I have a kudos for So Rhoads who works at the noncommissioned officers' dormitory, Bldg. 521. She always does a really great job. She is a consistently good worker and I would just like to let her know we sure appreciate her work. It seems we sometimes forget to say thanks to those who are working behind the scenes in making sure our customers are provided quality care. So Rhoads has received kudos from many of the unaccompanied NCO dorm residents and her efforts have not gone unnoticed by management. Thanks for your positive words. Long distance calls pose problem Q We have to use long distance and AUTOVON to call contractors in support of software development and we continuously get cut off. One day I was cut off four times during one conversation. When I asked if there was a limit on how long a call could be, I was told yes, approximately five minutes. It is very seldom we are able to take care of any of our e time business over the telephone in a to and our the alternative frame, only telephone conversations would be to go TDY. That would be extremely costly. Would it be possible to extend the length of time so that our calls won't It is unfortunate some people don't show the proper respect to our flag, especially during retreat ceremonies. Perhaps it is because they don't know the appropriate actions to take. At least, that is what I would like to think. Formal retreat ceremonies are held each Thursday at approximately 3:30 p.m., at either center or group headquarters. The following information should help educate those who don't know, and serve as a reminder for the rest of us. When you hear the bugle call "retreat," you should stop what you are doing, face the flag, and if military, stand at parade rest. During the playing of the national anthem, stand at attention, and if military, salute. People not in uniform should stand at attention and place their right hand over their heart. Men should remove any headdress with their hand and hold it over their heart. When the last note of the national anthem is played or the flag is grasped, whichever is later, you may resume your normal travel. Everyone should be proud to pay respect to the flag. During a retreat, think of freedom, national unity and the many devoted men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice so we may continue to fly our flag. Please help me by sharing this information with those who don't know. If the individual is blatantly disrespectful, notify his or her commander or director. Thanks for your concern. Maybe I'll see you at retreat! Guests may not enter commissary fSf the commissary recently when a took his girlfriend in. The ID checker guy asked if she had a current driver's license. When she said yes she let her go in. Is the commissary like the base exchange now where you can take people in as guests? J"tt I was in No, the commissary is not like the base exchange; relatives and friends cannot be signed in as guests. On the afternoon you refer to, one of our commissary cashiers was performing identification checker duties, and a customer approached the ID desk, showed his ID card and told the ID checker that his wife had forgotten her ID card. He asked if his wife could accompany him into the commissary. The ID checker requested to see his wife's driver's license to verify that the lady was who she claimed to be. The name matched with the name of her husband; therefore, they were allowed to proceed to do their shopping. Should you have any questions at any time while shopping at the commissary, contact a redcoat manager for immediate response. five-minut- get cut off? fl ArA This gives me an opportunity to clear up some misinformation. First, the call limit is a rule of thumb that applies The South Gate inbound lanes are posted to probably 80 percent of the telephone calls 25 mph due to the large volume of traffic or received by base employees. It is undermade that enters the base during the morning rush stood that some calls may last considerably hours. However, the base traffic council recently conducted a traffic survey and determined that longer than five minutes due to the nature of business being conducted. Is there going to be a change in the base shuttle schedule now that many workers are on the 54-- schedule? It is a little difficult to get around after 2 p.m. 9 The vehicle operations branch is not in a position to accommodate any further change to the base shuttle schedule. The Vehicle Transportation Division is working under a contract, and future manning increases or funding for added services are not foreseen. The services being provided are in accordance with the Statement of Work. Assigned personnel are on an eight-hou- r shift schedule and to date are not scheduled for a change to the 54-- shift. There is some confusion as to why you may experience problems getting around the base after 2 p.m. as the shuttle currently runs until 3:15 p.m. Also, the motor pool is a operation and should you require transportation for official business after normal shuttle bus hours, you may call the vehicle operations dispatch office at Ext. 71843 and request taxi service.
