Bedsaul 388th FW Public Affairs The Gunsmoke competition maintenance team from the 388th Fighter Wing left Hill AFB today for the shotout at Nellis AFB, Nev. The pilots on the team will leave Sunday at 11:30 a.m. "There's a tremendous amount of talent in the 388th Fighter Wing, but we can only send 45 people to represent us," said Col. Michael Navarro, 388th FW commander. "Their success will be a victory for every member of the 388th, the Ogden Air Logistics Center and the local community." The competition is a worldwide Air Force fighter gunnery meet that pits fighters in active duty and Reserve units and their maintenance support people against each other in a number of events. Of the 45 competitors from the 388th FW, 39 are maintenance people. The Gunsmoke competition will include s in addition to the and bombs It will be a combination of on target, and total hits in strafing runs that determines the top pilots in the competition. Maintenance will compete in an event that times crew performing aircraft chocking, refuela ing and munitions reloading. Maximum time allowed for this competition is 18 minutes. The 388th's best time in this event is 11 minutes, 58 seconds. Blevins feels teamwork is what will bring the team trophy home. "The team that can leave its egos at home and work together for a common goal has the best chance of winning the competition," he said. James Corrigan, pilot team leader, said, "They've seen real pressure during Desert Storm. I don't think the pressure gets worse than that." Still the crews have been willing to put in days if they have to. "We have as talented a maintenance team as any that's going to show up at Nellis. We're the best and we're going down to show it through our professionalism and teamwork," he said. "I want the other teams to know it's an uphill climb to beat us." The competition begins Sunday as the aircraft arrive at Nellis. They each have a time of arrival and are judged by how precisely they arrive at the cons count. trol tower. In this event, even 19 Oct. The competition will continue through when the awards banquet will be held. "Our team has worked long and hard to get ready for Gunsmoke and I'm confident they'll make the 388th proud with their performance," said Navarro. 16-ho- rnilli-second- 388th Fighter Wing Gunsmoke team-- 1 991 Pilots James Corrigan, team leader Capt. "The commander will be paying close attention to these results." Thompson echoes that sentiment in his cover letter accompanying the survey. "We don't make progress if we continue to only look at our past success," he said. "We grow when we know the areas where we need to improve. "This is why I need your participation and help you have the knowledge and awareness of what affects you." Workers in one of the two directorates already surveyed are starting to see some results. Supervisors and working groups have been briefed and they are looking at ways to fix the problem areas. "Many seem to believe it's a quality program and JtTZmC Capt. "TQM has less to do with the quality of the product than it has to do with changing how we think about managing an organization. "Also, we're finding out that in some cases we haven't done as good a job of communicating as we thought," the colonel added. Lindsay is hoping Question No. 91 on next week's survey will spark thoughtful responses from Hill workers. The question is What is the one thing you would like to see the general do to make total quality management work here at Hill? "The general will see every one of these comments," Lindsay said. "QP will consolidate them before he sees them. "He won't know which area of operation or person submitted the comments. They will be sanitized Capt. Eric Pell SMSgt. David Blevins, team NCO in SSgt. Surveying 12,000 people is not a cheap process. In addition to printing the 27 pages of the survey, there's the time and effort to tabulate the results and then the review process of the results with each of the work groups. Lindsay said they probably could have just settled for a random sampling that would have done the same thing, but Hill leaders decided to ask nearly everyone for their opinion. "Working together, we can make the Ogden Team a reality," Thompson says in his cover letter. "I do value your involvement in this project, and your ideas about our team and our processes." Anyone with questions or concerns about the survey can contact the QP Office and talk to Lindsay or Garnet Borror, Ext. 74391.
