The fuselage of the aircraft arrived at 5:15 p.m. Saturday aboard a C-- Galaxy. to Hill from Beale The plan to move the SR-7n works for a year. When in the AFB, Calif., ft became known this aircraft was being decommissioned, it was secured for the Hill museum, but that was only part of the project getting it to Utah was another problem. The 67th Aerial Port Squadron at Hill and the 405th Combat Logistics Support Squadron at Beale both participated in the effort to cut the SR-7down to a size that would fit into the cargo compartment of a C-- transport aircraft for its trip to Hill. The skin of the aircraft was removed around the wing braces. The braces were then cut and the wings, engine nacelles and engines were separated from the fuselage. These parts were trucked to Hill earlier, leaving the fuselage to be loaded into a C-and flown here Saturday. The Blackbird is fast. It routinely flies at greater than three times the speed of sound. It is the world's highest flying aircraft and has been flown at more reconthan 100,000 feet. It carries naissance systems capable of surveying 100,000 square miles of the earth's surface in one hour. s and the Orbiting satellites replaced the 1 I -- photo-reconnaissan-ce 4- 5 1 has-bee- t 1 it .r.J. .V I 1 1) i ' ; 5 U.S. Air force Photo by Kothy Hurt Open wide 5 high-performan- SR-71- Workers from the 67th Aerial Port Squadron remove the to Hill Saturday. fleet was mothballed in the late 1980s, but they came out of retirement and went to war in the Per- sian Gulf. The SR-7that has come to live at Hill hasn't been flown since 1976 because it was an experimental con- figuration that proved to be unstable in flight.
