Gunsmoke, as it is more commonly known, features the "best of the best" from tactical units in the active duty forces. The major awards up for grabs are Top Team (overall team w inner), Top Gun (individual pilot with overall highest point total), Top Crew Chief, Top Maintenance Team and Top Weapons Load Team. There are also awards for teams and individuals who perform best in their respective aircraft categories. About 80 aircraft and 1,000 people will be involved in the competition. The competition demonstrates the capabilities of the fighter and attack I gj (Q o on weapon systems, enhances esprit de corps, increases unit training efficiency and recognizes the best aircrews and aircraft maintenance and combat servicing teams, Tactical Air Command officials said. The eight Hill pilots training for the competition are: Gunsmoke team leader Lt Col. Jim Corrigan; Maj. J.D. Collins; Capt. Mike France, Capt. Eric Pell. Navy Lt. Martin O'Loughlin, Capt. Rob Hertberg, Capt. Stan Colgate, and 1st Lt. Chris Weggeman. Approximately 60 maintenance and support workers have also been selected for the 388th TFW's team. Maintenance officer in charge is Capt. Larry Gatti. The NCO in charge of the team is SMSgt. David Blevins. NEWS BRIEFS Air Force drops evaluation system The Air Force has dropped the Promotion Advantage Through Superior Performance program, Air Force officials announced Aug. 9. The decision was based on inputs from major commands and the Enlisted Evaluation System revalidation group, and is effective immediately, officials said. "Overall opinion is that the EES system, as originally designed, can provide the needed differentiation in duty performance evaluation, promotion recommendation and the four levels of endorsement to ensure we continue to identify and promote the best qualified," Gen. Merrill A. McPeak, Air Force chief of staff, said. The PATS program has already been used for the 1991 chief master sergeant cycle and the 1992 senior master sergeant cycle. Uttd,BIem, Firsts) asm Y sabotaged A detonator apparently designed to set off an explosive charge during recoil when an AK47 rifle is fired has been discovered in the buttstock of some of the rifles recovered in the Middle East, Air Force Reserve officials said. Booby traps were discovered in three recovered rifles. The wood buttstock had been hollowed out and a detonator and explosive charge put in. Any AK47s with a wood buttstock that recently came from the Mideast are suspect and shouldn't be fired, officials said.
