Show T SPORTS Hill easily got through the preliminary games Friday night and Saturday to decide the seeding of the tournaeight teams for the final ment Sunday. Then Falcons faced a tough test from Steve Bill's Construction of St. George. The Falcons scored six runs in the first inning of the game against Steve Bill's after the Bill's pitcher walked the first four Falcon batters. The Falcons never scored again, settling instead on keeping the other team from catching up. The win against Steve Bill's assured the Falcons of at least a silver medal and led to what Abbott said was the closest call of the games for his team against Richards. The game went five scoreless innings before the Falcons "manufactured" a Falcon team brings home gold meda 6-- 4 Hilltop Times staff run. A team representing Hill AFB took the gold medal in fast pitch Softball at the Utah Summer Games Sunday in Cedar City, Utah. Cedar City is approximately four hours away from HilL Led by playercoach Dave Abbott, the Falcons went 54 against seven other teams in the men's division of fast pitch softball. To win the gold, the Falcons beat Richards Industries of American Fork in the championship game. It was the top of the sixth when Bobby Black got to first on an error and then stole second. He later advanced to third on a wild pitch. The manufactured run was to be the work of Dave Kahn, who was to bunt Black home. After two strikes, however, Kahn was forced to swing away and got a hit past the pitcher. Kahn, whom Abbott describes as having lighting speed, beat the throw from the shortstop to first, enabling 0 21 H,!!tcp Times Black to score the run for the Falcons. The team held the Richards team scoreless in the bottom of the inning and the game was called after six because of time. Bringing the gold back to Hill was an especially happy surprise for Abbott and his team, he says, because they only managed two practices together before the Summer Games. Hill has not had a varsity fast pitch softball team in three years and efforts to start an intramural fast pitch softball league this year fell through before the season started. "We felt we could win some games, but didn't think we'd take the gold," he said. "Some of the guys had never even played fast pitch softball before. "But, (the players) are naturally talented and they had a desire to win. That's all it took. We looked like a team who had been playing together all year." Abbott praised three of his players in particular for their batting prowess during the games: David Kahm, who batted .444 for the six games; Vert Ea son, with a .375 average; and Dan Francouer, with a .357. on single-eliminati- by SSgt.
