Show THURSDAY APRIL 30, 1953 MILFORD (UTAH) NEWS DA y TO DAY WITH DOUG f 'J A COMMENTARY 0 WASHINGTON h AMERICAN ing. It seems a farce to have these programs and at the sathe time because of government imposed regulations on interest, it Is Impossible to obtain these loans. Both G I and F H A loans have insurance and security features not available under conventional loans, so that in spite of an increase in interest, these loans will still be more' attractive to borrowers than other mortgage plana. An increase in interest will a 'so act aa a boost to the building industry and will help offset any recessionary trends. We are faced with the alternative of either granting this alight increase or preventing many families the benefits and pleas ure of owning .their own home. My mail would indicate that most people wouldn't object to paying a dollar or two more a month in interest if it means the difference between owning: their own home or continuing to rent or live with, relatives. The only other alternative to increasing interest rates would be some form of government direct loan cpntrary to our free enterprise system. What do you think? A Battar Tomorrow . . President Eisenhower in his recent address to the nation kindled hopes for a brighter tomorrow if and when peace returns to the world. He asked for the followingrAn honorable armistice in a uhiledTCorea with free elections and a true and total peace; in Europe, free movement of oersons. trade and ideas, and full Independence for all European nations: a United Nations ban on atomic weapons and a limitation of armed forces; for the Undeveloped Areas of the World, a fund for aid and rein the United construction; States, real prosperity not based on a war economy or deficit In 90 days of the spending. new administration we have something that was not realized in two years of the "Cold War." We have taken the initiative away from the Com munists. Yes, it will be a Bet ter Tomorrow if we have faith and Derseverance and do not compromise principles for polit ical expediency. Wanttd Better PM's Manv neoDle have made in quiries as to whether the new administration intends any wholesale firing of present postmasters appointed under the New Deal. The answer is No! In 1936 postmasters were taken out of the old "spoils system" and Disced under Civil Service, and hence all Dermanent ap pointments of postmasters must be made from CS registers established by competitive examinations. It Is true that when a vacancy occurs, a congressman does have some discretion in making a new appointment, but he is limited to nominating a PM from one of the persons rated among the top three on the. CS examination. Basically,- - however, the selections is determined more by qualifications of applicants than, their political affili ations, thus insuring appointees will be competent to penorm this Important Job. The new ad ministration has recently Im posed higher standards on Pmi than was needed to qualify in the past, and all future examinations will be aimed at select-i- n a 'the best Dosslble man or woman to fill each vacancy. Much th tame Drocedure also applies to the appointment of rural malt carriers. Ever since the end of World War II it has become increasingly more difficult to obtain one of these low rate interest mortgages because loaning institutions can loan all of their available funds at higher or more attractive interest rates. Along with the higher cost of living and higher wages, interest rates on the competitive market have climbed as well as the interest rate paid on savings accounts and on government bonds. As a result some adjustment in F H A and G I interest rates is necessary if persons whom this legislation was intended to benefit are to obtain loans and move into homes of their own. No new legislation is necessary H nut mis uivichk ... and F H A interest rates because the V A and F H A administrators are empowered to increase these rates providing the Secretary of the Treasury concurs in the weed.
