Five days later, the Utes were shut out once again by BYU, this time 0 in the second round of the MWC Tournament. At that time, the Utes had never beaten BYU in their history. They had never won a conference championship. They had never even been invited to the NCAA Tournament. to today, and the outlook of soccer at the U has changed dramatically so much so that the Utes have earned the right to be mentioned among the nation's best soccer teams. How things have changed. Since Rich Manning took over for Amy Winslow as the school's head soccer coach following the 2001 season, Utah has now defeated BYU twice. The first time was in d the of last year's NCAA Tournament, a revenge game for a pion BYU Cougars 2-- Fast-forwa- first-roun- 1 regular season loss at Ute Field last November. The second time happened this past Saturday night in Provo, of all places. The Utes won a thriller in overtime thanks to a game winning goal off the foot of freshman forward Amanda Feigt, a goal indicative of the way Manning and his recruiting staff have replen -0 ished the Utes' talent level with some of the best recruits in the country. Not only did the victory keep the Utes' perfect in conference record intact, but it also snapped the During Wrinslow's seven year tenure, the Utes saw some success, including a 1 record in conference play in 1909. During those seven seasons, the U was a combined in conference play with no conference titles. It has been Manning who has helped the Utes get over the hump, MWC record in compiling a two seasons and now, the team has achieved its first-evoutright regular season conference title. This week, the Utes have a perfect opportunity to assert themselves on the national scene. They will host the MWC Tournament at Ute Field from Wednesday to Saturday, giving them two advantages: that of the No. seed and, of course, the home field. Should they come out of the tourney victorious, as expected, it should prove that the battle for conference supremacy has indeed changed sides and it doesn't look like Manning and the Utes will be ready to give that up for a long time. 6nMA Co") UAJE Loifcjf iNi B&EM SCrW OASSiS. He makes the mistake of confusing individuals who identify as gay with those who want to change their sexuality who frequently identify only as having attraction," or SSA. In this confusion, not only does he claim that the LGBT Resource Center should be providing resources to a population that is clearly not identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, but the request equates to demanding that the Center for Ethnic Student Affairs provide information on how to be Caucasian. "same-se- x Richardson requests sponsored events at which an individual with SSA would feel comfortable, but fails to recommend what such an event would be. Due to the closeted nature of SSA, this seems a stretch. If these individuals have anxiety over being labeled gay, what kind of event could the LGBT Resource Center sponsor that would eliminate this possibility? There are also problems with Richardson insisting that the LGBT Resource Center carries scientific materials such as the work of Spitzer. Any individual who has taken a research methodology course could see Spitzer's very obvious methodological errors, , particularly in his sampling practices. Ignoring this, Richardson rallies his cause in the name of suicidal SSA individuals who are distraught with their sexuality. Yet he ignores the LGBT youth that I work with each day, who are suicidal because society still believes that they should change. All else aside, Chronicle readers should be aware that the LGBT Resource Center provides a wide range of events and information. Two fine examples are last year's debate on reparative therapy and the qualitative work of Lee Beckstead on individuals who have undergone reparative therapy. Jed R. Brubaker Senior, Psychology Roberts' work taken out of context Editor The following is in response to Cara Wieser's article in The Daily Utah Chronicle of Oct 24 titled "Origin of Book of Mormon questioned." In March 1922, Elder B. H. Roberts took a devil's advocate approach to the Book of Mormon in a prepared draft of a written report to the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints. Doubtless he did this for two purposes: (1) to motivate the church leaders and other defenders of the faith to prepare responses to critics of the Book of Mormon based on existing data, and (2) to motivate the church leaders and other defenders of the faith to search more diligently for additional data to support Book of Mormon claims. Evidence that B. H. Roberts was simply using a devil's advocate approach include: (1) a 1923 letter concerning his draft report in which he wrote: "Let me say once and for alL so as to avoid what might otherwise call for repeated explanation, that what is herein set forth does not represent any conclusions of mine. I am taking the position that our faith is not only unshaken but unshakable in the Book of Mormon, and therefore wTe can look without fear upon all that can be said against it" (2) B. H. Roberts' conviction of the truth of the Book of Mormon was "unshaken and frequently expressed down to the time of his death." (See B. H. Roberts and the Book of Mormon, Truman G. Madsen) Not one of the potential problems on Roberts' list can or will disprove the authenticity of the Book of Mormon. His objectives in taking a devil's advocate approach have paid off. Reasonable answers have been found or postulated for each and every potential problem listed by Roberts. All Book of Mormon claims are possible and credible. Allen H. Most Peace: of us know we want it some know we need it. Peace: in all of us, those of us at the U, Salt Lake City, Utah and beyond. If we look beyond the sanitized version of human life that we receive in the United States, only some in the region of the Dead Sea continue to urge for the military occupation of Palestinian land. Dissenting Jews are quickly becoming a majority in Israel, running advertisements in major newspapers, holding vigils and demonstrations in public places, sponsoring discussions and dialogue all over Israel and the occupied territories and forming organizations, oftentimes with Arabs. Their experiences, views, and strategies might differ, but they all agree that peace is deeply needed and worth sacri- fice. Proof is easy to come by. Near the top of the power structure (just below the militarized and corrupt), we find individuals in the Knesset, university leaders and business managers searching. For example, in May 2003, five prestigious Israeli, Palestinian and Japanese individuals met in Conference Hall, Tokyo, Japan, to build confidence in one another's hopes through discussions about mutual cooperatioa These wholehearted negotiations facilitated by the Japanese focused on forming a stable, interdependent relationship via dialogues on "the psychological road map" and a "joint economic future" The dignitaries agreed to end the occupation and "all forms of terror and violence" and to approach "a solution in the Peace Process." Each party expressed hope at the joint press conference concluding the ( "Stop the Bulldozers" to "Get Out of All the Occupied Territories," and have attracted up to 6,000 at ' two-sta- te talks. Although not often heard in the mass, corporate media of the United States, voices dissenting from the ineffective and illegal poli- cies of militarized violence are gathering together in mass and grassroots organizations all over the region. Peace Now was founded in 1978 by soldiers and reserve officers in the IDF (Israeli occupation forces), adhering to "the Zionist values upon which the State of Israel was founded" and simultaneously believing "a democratic, Jewish state can and roust be secured without subjecting another people." Peace Now pressures the Israeli government to seek peace through negotiation and compromise, acknowledging that there are two peoples in the land and each has history, rights and narratives. Peace Now has organized rallies of up to 400,000 people through four strategic campaigns: Jason Hardy Chronicle Opinion Writer movements including harvesting olives and rebuilding homes. And the movement toward peace is also achieved with broad, international strategy. For example, the Tikkun Community creates a spiritual vision of peace by seeking solutions that are "both and a Third Path." Tikkun actions are led by a concept of solidarity, simply stating that "we are all harmed by oppression directed at any group or individual" Weary of the old dichotomies of and Palestinian Israeli, the Tikkun community is building a movement of "love and caring for each other," opening up dialogue between individuals, challenging the low spiritual quality of "the agendas of our allies in the progressive social change movements," and based on the tradition of Jew ish prophets, courageously "speaking truth to power." Their mission statement reads, in part, "an important step in that process (of creating sustainable peace is for both sides to learn how to tell the other side's narrative In a convincing and compasUorute way Tikkun believes all parties should adept nonviolent strategics such as iboar employed by Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi pro-Isra- Settlement Watch, Jerusalem, Dialogue and Youth. All four campaigns serve as embodiments of the different areas in which progress must be made. Another clear example of the shift from antidemocratic Israeli policies is Gush Shalom, The Peace Bloc," founded in 1093. Sometimes described as "radical" or "resolute," the group likens itself to "a small wheel with a strong, independent drive that activates a bigger wheel that in turn activates an even bigger wheel." Gush Shalom aims to influence Israeli public opinion on the issues of conciliation and peace through an end to the occupation, accepting the right of mutual sovereignty and reinstating a porous border based on the occupation Green pre-196- 7 Line, with Jerusalem as a two-stat- e capital. Gush Shalom's campaigns range from "Release all Palestinian Prisoners Immediately" to "Marking the Green Line and left-righ- t, el: Arab-Jewis- h All in all, circumstances in the region of the Dead Sea create a powerful and uncertain situation where dissent from the party line or modification of the accepted, historical narratives is often very costly. We must acknowledge that still a good many Jews, whether Israeli or in the Diaspora, claim thai any criticism of the Israel's illegal military occupation or for- eign policy platform is betrayal While praising their beauty and strength, we must also recognize that each and every one of the 1,184 bold and courageous Israeli refuseniks (a growing group of soldiers and reservists who refuse to serve in occupied territories) encounter discourses of alienation, Still ignorance and two thirds of the Israel does not support their actions. I don't claim to know the correct methods for sustainable and meaningful peace, but I know we must try to engage in solidarity with those of different backgrounds, beliefs, genders nd races, and to seek empathy with stories different from ours.
