What is she looking at? A memory perhaps. As "The Widow of St. Pierre" opens, she states in the voice-ove- r that the film is based on actual records from St. Pierre, a French fishing island, in the year 1849. The story created from the records is one of a drunken man who commits a senseless murder. He is sentenced to execution, but there is no guillotine (which the French sometimes refer to as a "widow" an element lost in the translation). There is also no executioner. Stallone stars as Joe Tanto, sage old race car expert who "threw it all away" when he was young. Carl Henry (Burt Reynolds) calls him in to star in his own movie, the Renny Harlin film "Driven," and also to give moral support to the "next big thing" in cart rac between the two racers, but that doesn't keep Gershon who really should consider getting the ends of her mouth soldered shut, if not the whole damned thing from snipping out every other line through that insipid beak of hers. Blye is overwhelmed by his team's high expectations for him, as well as by his love interest, Sophia Simone (Esteila Warren), who still has feelings for rival driver Beau Brandenburg (Til Schweiger, the foreign guy with the temper from "SLC Punk"). The film has the feel ( of a fairy tale, an opera and a folk tale, combining both song and visuals to tell much of the story. Our tale begins on a stage where a pansori or Korean singing storyteller delivers the first few notes of his song. He sings the love story of Chunhyang and Mongryong, the daughter of a courtesan and the son of a governor. The film is narrated through song by the pansori, and the action cuts between his performance on stage and the visual story he tells. At times, his e song and the of the characters become one, and he sings over their voices. This method of storytelling becomes very engrossing to the viewer, pulling you irTto the story through the visuals and the poetic nature of the song. The story itself is a rather simple one.
