Show Friday November The Daily Utah Chronicle - 7 j, 1995 Intolerance Affects All Editor: My letter is in response to Nadine Carta's Oct. 17 letter, "Is Utah the 'Riit Place for Intolerance?" She describes treatments she has experienced as a amongst Mormons. I thought I would write to say that people arc people with their tendencies and needs. Not only are subject to negative experiences. Within the IDS church there is a tendency to classify, label, discriminate, stereotype, reject and exclude. There is a need to be included and accepted a need to be loved by relatives, neighbors, peers and fellow ward members. There are sexual needs and hypocrisy. There are the hierarchies of the "haves" and the "have-nots.- '' If one spends some time going to church meetings in the wealthy area of the valley, one becomes exposed to the attitude. In this group, divorced sisters, converts from foreign mission fields, and those whose incomes are below a certain level eventually realize that they are not welcomed. Going to church singles' dances, one can end up dealing with single or married brothers, whose purpose for coming to the dance is to find a mate for the night Or, one can be exposed to opinions like: "The fat sisters would do best not coming here, because nobody is going to ask them to dance or for a date anyway" Sexual needs are dealt with outside one's own domain by respondservice. ing to personal ads, renting a mail box and voice-ma-il Nadine Carter mentions in her letter that she has several Mormon friends who took the time to get to know her instead of jumping to biased, incorrect conclusions about her. There really is a Mormon principle that states: "Be in the world, not of the world." Being a church member is not a guarantee that one is a "good" does not necessarily mean that one is a person. Being a "bad" person. Becoming fanatic and defensive over one's religion could be a sign of uncertainty and weakness. Once one has understood the message of a religion and been touched by the spirit, one is filled with inner peace and humbleness, and gains an unselfish, unbiased love for one another. Sini Decastro senior business WMOMDWB-CWw- it non-Morm- - non-Morm- - Racism from page 6 stuck in a world filled with rape, murder and isolation ... and all of a sudden it's my fault, because I'm white. The people that share my skin color have absolutely nothing to do with your current state of oppression. In fact, we are no longer the ones doing the oppression we are actually the ones being oppressed. Why can't I be proud to be white? Why do I have to treat you as being any more special than anyone else? Do we live in a world Police from page 6 they can buy kegs? It's like the 3.2 beer. The government thinks that the more time you spend in the bathroom, the less time you'll spend drinking. This line of thinking is especially flawed, considering the number of people who can drink in the bathroom. The state of Utah has some of the most paternalistic laws I have ever experienced. To actually believe the state can socially engineer people away from drinking by watering down their beer, is ridiculous. People like to drink. If they have to, they will simply drink twice as if you make this choice you've also chosen the consequences. We can just drag all of humanity through where someone who is born white is automatically a racist? What happened to those freedoms that your forefathers fought so hard to uphold? Government has forcefully entered into our private lives in virtually every aspect of living. What would Henry David Thoreau do if he was living in '95? He would be rotting in jail. Utah is viewed by outsiders as a backward state. It's no wonder. This state prosecutes more people for boodegging than any other state in the union (basically if you get caught bringing a keg back from Wyoming). I hope one day we will reject police presence at our private parties. Maybe one day die state will realize that no matter how hard they try to deter people from drinking and getting drunk, and from having a good time, their efforts will always be in vain Meet (KoIBeria at the Institute 10:30 am No. Most of my skin was burned oft, and I'm in hellish agony.
