" Included in northern Utah are wetland areas along the east shore of the Great Salt Lake that provide habitat for a number of bird species. Wetlands and riparian areas are among the most diverse and important ecosystems in the world. Reynolds continued, "We are working with other state and federal agencies to see that construction in these areas will have minimum impacts on the ecosystem. We're looking at key wildlife areas and mapping them with GIS systems. This will allow us to work with city and county planners to assess areas of high concern." Currently, the majority of lower elevation open space is privately owned and many farmers and ranchers are selling land to developers. li r .rirt'"t j Smoke Free Environment COPY 1 Tti 1. According to Reynolds, Utah is currently in a balancing act between growth and protecting areas that are important to the traditional values and quality of life Utahns enjoy. This conflict is sure to follow Utah into the next millennium, and there are no clear answers as many areas that once supported large numbers of wildlife are now subdivided and developed. The Division of Wildlife Resources is working in many areas to help assure that habitat for Utah's wildlife is preserved as growth continues. Reynolds reported that in northern Utah, the Division is primarily involved wit h protect- V y55 cnjit r 1 approximately $2 million annually, some of those dollars are used to protect open space from I SkuSFi I), development and allow people to interact with wildlife. For example, the Division of Wildlife Resources' Northern Region used about $100,000 last year for conservation easements with private landowners. These easements are valued at more than $1 million, according to Rory Reynolds, Habitat : Manager for the Division's Northern Region. Reynolds commented that conservation easements, "provide a 'win, win' for landowners and the public." space issues are Open becoming increasingly important throughout Utah. As development gobbles up areas that ' once supported agriculture and wildlife, populations of deer and elk are forced to survive on smaller tracts of winter habitat, leading to starvation and stress. In addition, the concentration of animals may also destroy vegetation in these areas for many years. Reynolds , commented, "If we allow growth to continue the way it has in the past, we will lose these areas and the wildlife they support. We will not be able to get them f.: wrvvvw 26HS00 0 iinimiJwn otC rW |
