Here is where we are losing: Those "sophisticated" magazines which were eliminated from and Circle K are again available in Utah County, this time behind the counters of two national chain bookstores, Barnes and Noble and Borders. Movies similar to those confiscated from Movie Buffs and viewed at the first trial are available at some of the area. And new hotels in the Provo-Oreanyone who compares these movies to films shown in local thethe aters is unclear on the content of these movies. These are films that originally depicted graphic sexual acts in with only the painstaking detail most graphic details removed. They bear little resemblance to anything you are likely to see in a local theater or on cable television programming. Satellite television gives local individuals access to channels that carry similar "cable- - edited" versions of hardcore pornographic films. The Internet, for all its tremendous potential, is an international public forum that also provides easy access to extreme pornographic images of all varieties. Parents can protect their children and homes from these images with filtering software, but government has found itself unable to regulate the content on the world wide web. If a Utah County jury can agree that the material on trial from Movie Buffs violates the standards of our community, then prosecutors will have some legal basis to beat back the tide of pornographic material that is rising in our midst. The Movie Buffs trial is an opportunity to throw up some barriers against this barrage of pornography. If may be a quixotic battle, but it is one well worth fighting. of Movie Bufls on obscenity charges. A Salt Lake daily newspaper, which regularly delights in poking fun at Utah County's attempts to maintain a higher level of moral integrity, went so far as to accuse the County Attorney's criminal prosecution of the case as nothing more than vindictiveness. In doing so, the Salt Lake Tribune missed the point. The Movie Buffs trial isn't about spite. Rather, it is about establishing a baseline for community standards that will give the county legal authority to prosecute those who would pander pornographic material in our communities. If this trial will help eliminate this material, or even slow its entrance into our communities, then it is a battle well worth fighting. This is a battle Utah County has and won. We won when fought before local communities convinced local stores to stop stocking "sophisticated" men's magazines behind the counter. We won when Lehi's Circle K, at the time the only store in the valley stocking those same magazines, decided to drop the magazines. The issue was so volatile, it ended with the store going out of business. We won when Movie Buffs closed its doors in Lehi and American Fork, taking its "cable- - edited" movies with it, even though the first Movie Buffs trial owner-manag- m ended in a mistrial. In a more recent battle, we won when a Provo hotel decided to remove movies its "cable-edited- " pay- - per-viein light of the controversy created by this second trial. If the county can win this case, other hotels now offering the movies can be expected to follow suit. These are important victories, and w they are important because the war against pervasive pornography is being To my Valentine: the Not long ago I mentioned that I had D been playing "name that tune" at Rock's Rocky Mountain Music. I had been making a list of tunes I wanted that brought back memories of our courtship days (hoping my wife had the same fond memories). I usually had no idea who the performing artist was, so that's where Rock came in; if he didn't know, his wife usually did. I decided it might be fun to write down which tunes I selected and why, which means you too can play "name that tune." At our company Christmas party, we played the game with the first few seconds of songs from famous TV shows. It was a lot of fun. It's amazing how certain songs bring back truckloads of memories; however, like the TV shows, most of mine are from the 60s and 70's, well, mostly the 70's. Are you ready to play NAME THAT TUNE? (Answers at the bottom ' Page 2 Oh, the injuries to this unnamed patient were listed and the vital signs given, and with that, we concurred that the injuries must be fairly minor. Patient number two was also a male, and my wife nearly shot through the roof. His injuries also seemed to be minor, as previously indicated. The third patient was listed as a ld window. My wife's In the meantime, the Lehi Ambu- lance reported to county dispatch that they had arrived at American Fork Hospital. My wife couldn't stand the suspense any longer and jumped out of bed to get to her cell and despite the fact that the injuries again seemed to be fairly minor, my wife was now on the edge of being a basket case. With the tension running high at that point, the transmission broke up and we lost contact between the ambulance and the hospital. In a matter of seconds, however, the ambulance again made contact with the hospital and told the Emergency Room specialists that Patient 4 was a male who didn't have severe external injuries, but did have some significant damage to his mouth because of braces. My wife knew at that point that Patient 4 must be Son Number 1 at our house and started to panic. We called dispatch and admitted to them that we had been eavesdropping via scanner and, having heard the sketchy accident details, that we believed our son to be among the occupants of the car. She said that another agency had handled the call and patched me through to their office. For the second time, I told of having heard the report on the scanner and suggested that one of the victims in the care belonged at our home. The dispatcher placed my call on hold, and could have even been abducted by aliens for all I know, because she never returned to the ears perked up, and she suggested that I turn on the scanner listen to the real life drama unfolding before our very so we could ears. We ' line. About three years ago, we happened to turn on our police scanner precisely at the moment that the Lehi Ambulance was called to a familiar address to attend to a woman who had fallen. We thought that the experience was rather bizarre but we had no idea it would become deja vu, too. Last Saturday night, while my wife and I were catching up on the events of the day, planning for the next day and expressing concern that son was still not our home at midnight, we happened to hear the sound of a siren outside the didn't hear where the ambu- lance had been sent, only that ambulance was standing by in case they needed extra help. Not long after we started listening, we heard the first ambulance, already on the scene, tell dispatchers that a second one would not be needed because the victims' injuries were fairly minor. We could breathe easier, not only because of the report of the injuries, but because we knew whoever was the victim was in the good and capable hands of our local ambulance personnel. And thus it was that we went back to our discussion. In a few moments, the scanner elicited a tone that I knew to be the ambulance calling the hospital to let them know they were coming and to get assistance with the treatment. A familiar ambulance crewmem-ber'- s voice came over the line announcing to the hospital that they were en route with four patients from an automobile accident. The first patient was a male, and our ears again perked up; phone. She called the hospital's emergency room and explained that she had heard the story on the scanner and thought that one of the patients was our son. We may have sounded like kooks, having been listening in on a scanner, but, sensing that we were con- cerned parents, she checked on the ) ;; ovir,;, picked this song because it talks about getting caught in the rain. It reminds me of a motorcycle ride through Cedar Valley when we got caught in a major downpour. Soaked to the bone, we had to wait at the Lehi Maverick until it stopped. This song also reminds me that we still have to get away and act like newlyweds once in awhile. My wife and I like this specialty drink and if you need more hints, few people know this song by its real name. In today's newspaper there's a classified ad in the "personals" column for my wife. You don't have to look, it's just for her. 2. Rock tells me this song is probably the only big hit the Starland Vocal Band ever had, but about the time I asked Kelly to marry me (1976), it was always at the top of the charts and we spent many delightful afternoons 1 together. Except back then' I thought this song was mostly about kissin'g.' ' Sky rockets in flight... 3. Chicago recorded several of our favorites, but this one made our list when we took a family vacation and our second son, Nate, was in charge of travel music. We ended up singing along with this one usually at the top of our lungs: "If you see me walking by, and the tears are in my eyes..." 4. Another Chicago favorite says, "loving you girl is so damn easy." (My kids get a kick out of knowing we like this one.) 5. We dated and were engaged during the summer and there was "a warm wind blowing the stars around." And to the first person who can tell me what the word is after "I'm not talking about..." I'm going to give two free movie tickets, (you can enlighten me brettnewutah.com) by hold you till I die, till wT 6.fpaMa botn" 'break ' 'dtiwn and ' cry; I wanna 'r hold ya till the fear in me subsides." It's almost too much and I know just how he feels. 7. This Frankie Valli song reminds me that she sat on the third row aisle seat during stake conference; I was one of the speakers so I was on the stand. Her Mom told her I was staring at her. She was right; I couldn't help it (and to this day, I still can't). 8. 1 went on a date to the Pleasant Grove Strawberry Days Queen pageant with one girl to see another contestant, but the only person I saw was Kelly. She couldn't see my adoring looks from so close... and yet so far away. It's another Frankie Valli hit. I'm sure you and yours have the e same kind of memoI least at ries; hope you do. And no matter how much we look like fat, I'm glad we were able to phone call. And we are very grateful for our son's friends who were with him in the car. The young driver, for example, who has only had his driver's license for a few weeks, had been encouraged by his father and other teachers to wear seat belts, and had insisted that the boys put on their seat belts when they rode in his car. Grateful we are for young men who weren't being mischievous or delinquent, and in fact, who reacted with maturity when the deer ran in front of the car. After the car rolled, the young men crawled out through the window and flagged down a passing motorist for help. Perhaps they tried to tend to each other's wounds, for they1 continued to express concern for each other at the hospital. I'm not sure who is more lucky these four young men who survived a potentially disastrous car accident, or their parents for having sons of that caliber in the first place. sUHHffl: Jill ' name-that-tun- Jan Graham Utah Attorney General Long before I went to law school, I was a sixth grade teacher in west Salt Lake City.
