Athletes must always anticipate retirement; preparation can ease the pain Where do jocks go when they retire? That question has been on a lot of people's minds this week as Michael Jordan announced his second withdrawal from professional basketball. Last time, he spent an extended vacation in the baseball minor leagues; it's unlikely that's in the cards this time around. Nobody needs to worry about Michael, of course. He's got enough business ventures going now to keep him living quite comfortably in the style to which he's become accustomed, and market insiders are suggesting that his retirein ment will not diminish his fact, may enhance endorsement possibilities. He will find other things to do too, when he's ready. A dri- ven personality like his will never be satisfied always sitting on the sidelines. I'm not predicting a return to the NBA, but I am predicting he'll find new outlets for his com- lete must walk away from the activity that has been the focus of most of their energy and efforts for however long they had the chance to play. Sometimes this happens as part of natural progression, such as when a person develops a new interest or finishes their career at the highest level they are capable of play ing in. these changes are usually antici- and pated Here are a few suggestions I'd offer athletes, gleaned from decades as a player, coach, educator, observor and parent: Keep your grades up, no matter what. This will not only ensure academic eligibility to play, but will allow you other options when your playing career inevitably ends. If you find your natural motiva- tion lacking. ask your parents to help set some si weathered guidelines that will aid little with trauma. A Sometimes, however, the "retirement" is forced by factors the athlete can't control, like when the growth of the playground basketball terror tops out in eighth grade, or when a player fails to make the team final cut, or when an athlete suffers a career-endininjury. These are usi '' unexj" and more of a shock, but they too must be faced and can be overcome. Regardless of the age or circumstances when the day comes to pack it in, the trick is to keep enough balance in your life and personality to not only survive the transition, but thrive in the new directions your life takes. . g ; petitive energy. There is great danger in defining oneself in terms of any sport. Michael's greatness rests, in part, in the fact that he was able to transcend his. There is only one Jordan, however. The rest of us will never have his options. Sooner or later, every ath you. Make every effort to identify other things you enjoy doing that could give you a head start in choosing a career beyond your sport. Even if you think you'd like to coach, remember that even at the college level, you'll still need to be able to teach something. Don't use your devotion to your p'rt as an excusi tv) avoid family or church responsibilities. Even though you may not always be available at the times other people are doing these, make time when you can to attend to them. Take a break from your training routine once in a while. Just as your brain needs to rest from studying, your body needs rest from exertion. There comes a point becomes when training e and will counter-productiv- your hamper actually progress, not help it. The entry deadline is March 26 and the fee is $90 per team with two games minimum guaranteed. There will be awards presented in each bracket. The format includes separate brackets for boys and girls in five different age groups: grade 7, grade 8, grades and grades grades Placement is based on the grades in which players are currently enrolled. e To enter, call or If you are a young person aspiring now to play at the high school, college or pro level, realize that talent alone won't get you there. Hard work, usually excruciatingly hard work, will be required, and will lessen the fun you have experienced playing to this point. If you don't want to play badly enough to submit to the work required, find something else to do or be prepared for bitter disappointment. Finally, and most important, learn to play for yourself, r parents, your coaches, or anyone else. That way. when the time comes for you to walk away, you'll be able to do it without losing your sense of yourself. Then, like Michael Jordan, you'll be able to savor your memories, both the sublime and the learning kind, and move on with your life without living forever in the past.
