UVRMC starts $90 million expansion Utah Valley Regional Medical Center broke ground Aug. 6 for a $90 million expansion. Additions planned at the Intermountain Health Care facility include a new women's and children's center, a parking terrace, a new power plant building, and a variety of other remodeling projects among which will be a chapel and meditation room. A family guest house is also part of the construction. "Just 60 years ago this month, people recognized the need for a hospital in this area," said Larry Dursteller, vice president of Intermountain Health Care Urban South Region. "They planted an acorn that has grown over the years and now stands as a mighty oak in the valley." Since doors of the hospital opened in 1939, the institution has been "helping members of the community lead healthier lives, said Merrill Gappmayer, chair of the Utah Valley Regional Medical CenterOrem Community Hospital governing board. "We are committed to providing excellent service and care to our patients. With UVRMC's building project, we will be able to continue providing our growing community , with a healthier future." Gappmayer said all of the planned structures are needed "right now" and will be completed as soon as possible. Gayle Judd, chair of the Central Utah Health Care Foundation, told the assembled community leaders and gathered that the Health Care Foundation is directing the construction of the family guest house, the first of its kind in Utah County, as part of the expansion. When complete the guest house will provide an inexpensive lodging alternative for family members and patients who come to the medical center from central and southern Utah and other areas for extended treatment. Utah Valley Regional Medical Center serves as the major medical facility from south. Judd said for a minimal fee, these people can stay at the guest house, to be located west of the medical center on 500 West. The 6,500 square-foo- t building will include including one for a live-i- n manager, a reception area, shared kitchen, dining area, and laundry facilities.,. The new building out-of-to- Oncology replaces a Guest House on the north edge of the UVRMC campus, which has been torn down. Mary Ann Young, Operations Officer, IHC Urban South Region, said she was born at the old Utah Valley Hospital, each of her children were born there, and she has worked at the hospital for the past 23 years. "This is the community hospital for my family and my extended family," she said. said approximately Young 160,000 babies have been born at the hospital since it opened its' doors on September 18, 1939, the first of which was Paul Carroll. Carroll and his mother, Louise Carroll were special guests at the g with Paul donning a hard hat to take controls of a backhoe for the ceremony. Speaking briefly, Olene S. Lieutenant Utah Walker, Governor, said Utah can be proud of its' health care, both in quality and in cost. Other speakers were Dr. Steve Minton, UVRMC Neonatologist and director of Newborn Services at the hospital, and Dr. Kent Richards, IHC Senior vice president. This civil war drama is entertaining, educational and inspirational. "Under Both Flags" was written by Jody and Keith Renstrom, who also happen to own and run the Valley Center Playhouse. Before the first act, the audience is told that the play they are about to see is a true story, researched by the Renstroms. The story is based on actual journals written during the Civil War years. The play follows the character of Lieutenant William Avery, a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. Greg Bramwell plays the part of Lt. Avery with a sense of bravery and decency needed for the audience to feel sympathetic toward the Rebel soldiers. Soldiers are portrayed by Dan Smith, Kevin Hill, Robert Gibbons, Randy Gunther and Bruce Conrad. Keith Renstrom and Russ Daley trade off portraying the Yankee whole-somenes- on-ca- ll p.m. "Volunteers provide an invaluable service by delivering materials to the shelter," said Mollianne Buhn, United Way of Utah County Volunteer Center director .
