When they were in eighth grade, Eva, Evelyn, Bertha and Betty played on a softball team which beat a boys team from the high school. Evelyn said they had the best team. "I had to play baseball," said Betty. "My dad played, my brothers played. I had to play to keep up." Sports were also an integral part of their high school years, but games were a much greater occasion in those days. Eva remembers being at a basketball game in Nephi and not being able to see over the large hat of the man in front of her. She had to keep standing up to see over him, and when Lehi won by only one or two points, she pulled his hat down, causing his head to break through it. In addition to sports, Betty was also in operettas, on the track team and a participant in the posture parade, the forerunner of today's drill team. An accomplished pianist Evelyn played the piano for Carters Orchestra and for said Georgida Primary. she didn't participate on the teams or in the activities, possibly because she was expected to do chores at home right after school but said she was a "big fan" for the others and their activities. Memories of the Class of 1931 still burn bright for these last five classmates, who look forward each year to their annual reunion tradi tion. mm dresses By RUSS DALY left. In addition to being schoolmates, the five were also fairly close geographically, growing up in what many people know as the "old Third Ward" area, which people from the Central City referred to as "Dogtown." Eva disliked that term very much. She recalled the prospects of having to be initiated in a ditch, which she fought with all her might. "I didn't go in, but two boys did." The schoolmates attended the Franklin School at 545 W. State, later the home of Veron and Alene Curtis. Eva started at the New West School for her first year, then joined the others. The class later attend the Grammar School at 100 N. Center, then graduated from the old Lehi High School in 1931. Georgida and Eva remember walking to school barefoot because they wanted to "save" the one pair of shoes they received each year.
