Show Pioneers take split at Vegas tourney opponent and there is a time to play the game. After last Wednesday's win over Union, the Pioneer baseball team packed their bags and headed for the city that never sleeps, Las Vegas. They were invited to a three-dae tournament. No winners or losers bracket, no elimination, just four games. There were big schools and little schools, Lehi drew a couple of powerhouses and a couple of more moderate teams. They won two and lost two, but more importantly they played extremely well. Two of the schools, Calabasas and Chatsworth, could probably fit Lehi in to their locker room. When the wind died and the dust settled, all who saw knew that this club from Lehi was for real. 4 j www. - i ,, . J -- improve Your Health Call Dr Stone Today! Perhaps, but that wasn't the object of the tournament. Lehi didn't stack for the games, nor did they just play the starting nine. Some players got a chance at a different position, more often than not a number of starters were played sparingly. A couple of the young pitchers got a chance with some varsity back up and a few got to get in the middle of some great defense. The Pioneers played Chatsworth, a 4A school from the San Fernando Valley. Last year's record was 28-- first in league 16-Lehi started off well by scoring 2 in the first and one in the second, but that was it. They looked a little tired at times and a little confused at others. Brian Mantor got the starting job as first pitched but couldn't get on track and was replaced by Jason Yates, a young player who did a pretty good job. Jason Allan, Mantor and Adam Olson got the only hits. The three runs brought in were by Matt Felix, Mike Gray and Chad Yates. The final was 5, 1. 8-- 3. Include Up To " 5 32 S. Lehi saw four innings go by before Western scored, The Pioneers came back with one in the fifth and just when it started to cloud over Lehi tied it in the seventh and sent in into extra innings. Lehi made There were some outstanding plays in this game Adam Olson who had an incredible series made a number of stops and putouts. Curtis Jacobsen made a couple of difficult catches and threw the runner out to an over stretched Mike Gray. Western came within one but Lehi held them back to good the first three games. In being fair we don't know if their starting strength was on the field, but we know that Lehi's was not. It was a time to let some of the other players get in there. John Gray (made a nice play at second) Rusty Barnes, Gary Larson, Randy Barnes and pitcher Jason Childs all did a very well. Lehi gathered five hits, Curtis Jacobsen, Mike Gray, Mike Schneider, Brian Mantor all singled and Nate Nelson hit a double. Mike Gray and Chad Yates had the two RBIS. Brock Jones was the starting pitcher, he threw five innings and Jason Childs threw the last two. Both men made a good effort. In the end it was Calabasas 10 and Lehi 2. This was a great learning process and a chance to play against some really new competition. All of those who went agreed it was well worth it. $59999 HRM215SXA Your Authorized Full Service Dealer.
