The girls surmounted the odds by attaining a state tournament berth. Coming out of the ranks, the girls had to overcome a psychological factor in schools. They playing larger also had to field a team of mostly inexperienced players. There isn't a senior on the team. Two juniors, Becky Barnes and Trade Peck played regularly last year as sophomores, but Trade had to bow out in because of a knee injury. Lora Gurney, Teresa Price and Leah Madsen are all juniors. Despite limited playing experience, they came on strong as the season was drawing to a close. Liz Mills, sophomore center, has earned plaudits from players and coaches alike. She will be someone to be reckoned with the next two years. also a Tammy Bently, sophomore, came on strong to help her team attain the tourney berth. Other girls had to come back after the flu bugs struck but they ended the season on a high note and will be looking forward to next season. The girls ended up the season by gaining a berth to the state 3-tournament. They met Murray Monday and lost by a narrow margin, then the Pioneers met powerful Ogden in their final game 2-- 3-- mid-seaso- n of the season. Ogden was picked to take the gold trophy but the team was upset by Provo in the opening battle. It was a matter of too much experience and size as Ogden's Lady Tigers overwhelmed Lehi's girls Wednesday at Westminster College. The loss eliminated Lehi from the tournament Perhaps if there was one drawback to the girls' success at the tourney, it was their lack of confidence. Next year the girls should have that confidence. They are a group of achievers. Several of them are also members of the volleyball team and train all year long. They also like to attain honors in other areas of school life, earning good GPAs and partiripating in church activities. The girls beat Pleasant Grove, Payson, and Carbon for a season region record. 5--5 Other girls on the team and contributing to the 1983-8- success story are Leslie Smith, Lisa Hardy, Kristi Brown, and the following ninth graders: Tonya Palmer, Bea 4 Fitzgerald, Valene Gurney, Kim Rymer, Arlie Edwards and Laura mm MM mm LEHI LADIES BASKETBALL TEAM with coaches Debbie Naylor and Tori Berry.
