She apologized, saying she was very embarrassed about the whole thing and enclosed a new check for the entire amount It took just 11 years to complete that little transaction. But the received We important thing is ... it WAS completed and everybody's happy. Donna Chiuma dropped in to show off in her racquetball suit, (shorts and top). She explained her magnificent swing, how graceful she was and how she swoops, with arms outstretched, through the air. "It would've been better if I'd hit the ball though, she laughed." I happen to know that she does real ... good for her age. There have been several complaints that need airing about half time shows at football and basketball eames. On one machine, a new refugee can take a card with a printed word or phrase, put it through the machine, hear it spoken, repeat it, hear himself say it, then go back and make corrections. "This is all vocational oriented," Mrs. Dewey explained. "Our purpose is to help the student bring their skills up to the point where they can enter a trade and be successful. Sometimes they can do it in two quarters, sometimes in four." One new refugee from Pilau Bidong, Tho Tran of American Fork, entered the during the summer and is now enrolled in a welding class at UTC. "When they're in a trade class, they can come back an hour or two into a tutorial class if they need it," Mrs. Dewey said. "If a person has trouble with some of the terms in his trade manual, when it comes to studying that text and he still needs help, he'll have someone here who can help him." If the refugees thought it would be a grind to study at UTC, they were in for a happy surprise. The atmosphere at the center is one of fun. Teachers often get so involved personally with the refugees that they are with them after hours helping them with housing and employment, with weddings and new babies. During the summer, field trips were the rule, rather than the exception. "We've tried to allow them to experience some of the things that a normal American takes for granted," Mrs. Dewey said. They were taught how to use telephones, they were bussed to the hospital, shown the emergency room and how to use it and summon an ambulance. They were taken to the police department, to a jail, to a fire ' i$ lr Ice Cream W Glazed Donuts In 5 lb. y Quantities Limit 10 lbs. y j0X program department. "We want to be sure they understand the police here are their friends," she said. "We were sure they had some very unhappy experiences with the corrupt police systems in their own countries." The refugees were introduced to foods available in Utah markets that can be substituted for foods they were accustomed to, such as shredded carrots, which are very similar in flavor and texture to shredded papaya in salads. A. representative of the national dairy council came with a presentation, at the request of the refugee mothers, who want their children "to grow like American children." They were taught how to make quilts, to change a tire, and basic auto maintenance. As a finale to the summer program, Sauan Sukham, doctoral candidate at BYU public administration, spent one entire day explaining finances, charge accounts, layaways, and how to finance homes and automobiles in the Thai language. .
