Show Church. He recalled the recorded testimony of an ancestor, and its effect. Strengthening Priesthood Quorums Themes North Following the theme of the Priesthood quorums. Elder Robert E. Wells, Regional Representative of the Council of Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, addressed the Lehi North Stake Conference. Saturday and Sunday meetings were most impressive. The Sunday general session convened at 8:30 a.m., with a large congregation in attendance. Elder Wells highlighted his address with reports selected from his many expen riences among the strengthening Latin-America- people. He stressed the advice of President Spencer W. Kimball that every young men, age 19 years old, and especially up to age 25, accept a missionary assignment, agreeable to go wherever he may be sent. Young ladies are also urged to prepare to go on missions, he said, recalling that one third of the missionaries during his jurisdiction were ladies. They achieved great success, he said. He recalled several impressive experiences in which it appeared that some individuals require conversion by specific missionaries. A woman had a dream in which she saw two young men, dressed in white shirts, carrying books under their arms, who came to her. She remembered their faces, and recognized them when they came to her door. One of the young men recalled that he had been only two years old when the woman had the dream. In the case of President Gonzales of Monterey, Mexico, he and his wife had been praying. He said, "Don't fear my dear. Soon we will be visited by two messengers." He was a railroad man and was called away from home. Two Elders came to the house while he was gone, and his wife sent them away. She did not feel that she had done the right thing, so an appointment was made. They came at eight in the morning, talked for a while and were prepared to leave. Mr. Gonzales locked the door and asked them to stay. They talked for 12 hours straight, after which Mr. Gonzales asked for baptism. He became the first Stake President in Monterey, Mexico, and later a Mission President. In one case, two Elders came to the wrought iron gate of a wealthy family. The mother of the family met them and refused entrance, stating that she was a Catholic and satisfied with her church. The grandmother came to the gate, opened it, invited them in, had them sit down and gave them refreshments. The younger woman was speechless. Then she said, "What has gotten into Mrs. Brent (Julie) Loveridge was assigned to speak, representing the young wives and mothers. She expressed gratitude for Temple marriage, for her husband and for their young family of four sons, one age three, twins, one year old, and a new baby, just two months old. Already, they are planning for you?" The grandmother replied, "Couldn't you see that they are angles?" Advice given by Elder Wells stressed missionary work as the most important thing for a young man. "Do not date before age 16," he said, "Don't go steady until after your mission. You girls, do not be a reason for a young man not going on a mission," he stressed. Parents were urged to cooperate in making plans and preparing their sons for this vital service. Stake President F. Russell Hakes conducted the meeting, which opened with the congregation singing, "Redeemer of Israel." The opening prayer was by Walter Heinzig. The combined choirs of the Seventh and Eleventh wards sang the anthem arrangement of "Come, Come, Ye Saints." President Hakes was the first speaker. He recalled the journey of the Mormon Pioneers, during which some 10 percent died by the trial. Some turned back and some went into other areas than the one followed by the main body. Comparison was made with current goals and assignments, such as Temple work, missionary work and food storage. Naming the goal of 1000 endowments a month, he reported that good response is received and that 800 have been accomplished during the current month. The Stake has over 30 missionaries in the field. He urged response to the food storage program, increase in Fast offerings and other payments. He read from the Book of Mormon concerning the powers and methods of Satan, who "leadeth them by the neck with a flaxen cord, until he 1 were called. New Building Progresses President G. Dale Burgess of the Stake Presidency, commended those who have been so faithful in working on the building and grounds of the new North Stake Center. He noted that the building will soon be completed and ready for use, and that this conference may be the last one held in the current stake center dedicated some 10 years ago. He reitereated the appeal to keep the commandments. He quoted the advice given to study and learn of the doctrines of our Heavenly Father, as a shield against wrong doing. He told of a serious injury he had sustained, with gratitude for his improvement to the extent that he had been able to assist at the new structure. He recalled that as a youth, he had helped in building by carrying a few bricks at a time, and the joy received through this assistance. To teach the Gospel to all those who will listen was named as the paramount purpose of the Elder Glen father saying that the most important thing in his life is his family. He named the home as the most important preparation for marriage, with parents setting the proper example. While on his mission, he was queried concerning marriage problems. These were ususally the result of young couples not having been taught the proper way, he said. They had traveled extensively while her father was in military service. She expressed her joy in church service and the various callings assigned. Following the concluding address of Elder Wells, the choir sang, "King of Glory," directed by Lynette Rushton, with Jean Fitzgerald and Verlene Calton as accompanists. Karl Webb offered the closing prayer, and the conference was adjourned for three months. Sacrament meetings were held in the various wards. The congregation sang, as an interlude, "Let Us All Press On," directed by Carol Brady and accompanied by Verlene Calton. This was followed by the remarks of Larry Hadfield, a young husband. He quoted President Hugh B. Brown in saying, "Marriage is an institution of God." He recalled his East Main Street American Fork 1 Charles Louis Peterson's birthday.
