Credit amounting to millions of dollars is extended to buyers by the fruit auctions in ten metropolitan centers, so that the tremendous volume of fresh products handled daily may reach the ultimate consumer in the quickest possible time, Joseph A. Schwalb, secretary-treasurer of the American Fruit and Produce Auction Association, of New York City, said in an address here. "The fruit auctions in the United States extend a weekly credit of more than $7,000,000 to buyers," Mr. Schwalb d?clared. "The terms of sale vary somewhat in the different markets, depending to some extent upon local conditions. In practically all cases, however, the proceeds from the sales are remitted to the sellers within twenty-fou- r hours. The auction companies assume all credit risks. Notwithstanding the large amount of money outstanding, they have the distinction of never having failed to remit promptly to growers, shippers or owners, for any products sold at auction. "Due to this credit system, fresh fruit and produce from distant points reach the homes of consumers even those many miles distant within a few hours after the auction sale, thus creating a wide and rapid distribution of the growers' products."
