On the main street were the stores of the merchants and as the visitor gazed through their windows, he saw the clocks which hung on the walls- - But not a single clock in the city was right Some were a half hour late, some two, and some had not been wound for days. Behind their counters the merchants talked of "hard times," wondering how soon "good tiroes" would come again. Hardly a man among them looked as if his job were not a curse. Each day was like the next, save when new "To Let" sign appeared, announcing that another had come and waited and 's land, it was, where gone. A debts accumulate and men decay. "Hard times" was all the traveler heard. But the clocks on the walls were the silent symbols of their empty lives. And as the traveler paused to rest, he turned to his diary and wrote ; "Men are like clocks. They run down with neglect just as clocks do. Ambition must be wound by Interest in work and life or It will die like the last faint tick of the forgotten clock on the wall. These men speak of "hard times" and "good times" as If un man were really controlled by controllable circumstance. A day will come when they will see that men make their own circumstances. When that day comes we shall know that all times, good as well as bad, like the clocks on the walls, are only the outward sign of what is going on in our own hearts. Only that Nothing more.
