Interior Minister Mihai Ghitae, the former military commander of the Bucharest garrison and one of the first to side with civilians seeking Ceausescu's ouster, said generals in an interview that about 800 armed Ceausescu loyalists had been captured since the uprising began Dec. 15. He also said the army knew the location of the few still at large and was preparing to close in on them. The daily newspaper Adevarul said Tuesday that Ceausescu's youngest son, Nicu, a former party secretary in Sibiu, southern Transylvania, personally ordered army and police units to shoot on revolutionaries in the city last month. The dictator and his wife, Elena, were toppled in the popular revolt, convicted of "grave crimes" and executed Dec. language dealing with the amount of time required between convictions. ; Other law enforcement officials, including a representative of the statewide Association of Prosecutors, expressed worries that the bill might clog jails and courts. Richards said the bill is intended to punish repeat DUI offenders. It would make a second DUI conviction within a e period a class-- A misdemeanor, punishable by a year prison sentence. Deputy Salt lake County Attorney Alan Moll said he doesn't oppose the bill as much as he is concerned about its mid-Decemb- er demonstrators in Timisoara, 300 miles northwest of the atrocity that unleashed the popular revolution. Ceausescu "gave strict orders to shoot," Ghitae said. Mrs. Ceausescu, the virtual was no less harsh, Ghitae said. "They telephoned the wife of the despot that they couldn't shoot because there were women and children," he said. "She was told over the telephone that a pregnant woman told the soldiers, 'Shoot, and you will kill two people.'". "The tyrant's wife said, 'If you can't shoot, go with tanks against them."' Bucharest second-in-comman- d, Senators defer debate on stricter DUI penalty SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Senators deferred debate Tuesday on a measure that would make a third conviction for drunk driving a third-degre- e felony after lawmakers expressed concern over confusion in the bill's language. The bill, SB 4, sponsored by Sen. Winn L. Richards, will be taken up again by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday. The matter was pushed back after Sen. Lyle Hillyard, and committee staff members pointed out unclear zero-to-fiv- 10-ye- ar ramifications. He said language requiring a judge to put an offender in as prison or jail in addition to any other options such not does and treatment does away with judicial discretion ' address the root of the problem. c "While drunk driving is a curse . . He said it was chiefly concerned with research and was "not a network that launched missiles and sends out armies." "This network was used for playing chess, sending love letters, sending recipes" and research, Guidoboni said. He said the worm program did not cause any permanent : damage. The runaway program has been described as a "virus" but is more properly known as a "worm," which unlike a virus does not need a host program to duplicate itself. On Monday, prosecutors filed a motion asking U.S. District Judge Howard Munson to limit examination of witnesses on Morris' state of mind, specifically whether he intended to cause any loss or damage. The move was designed to thwart Morris' expected line of defense, that he didn't mean to paralyze the computer network. bandit receives prison sentence Top-Gu- n 7-ye- ar Graduate student Robert T. SYRACUSE, N.Y., (AP) attack on a Morris carefully plotted and executed a national computer network by setting loose a "worm" program, a federal prosecutor argued Tuesday. Morris devoted a lot ot time, energy and researcn to planning this assault" from his computer at Cornell University in Ithaca, Justice Department attorney Mark Rasch said in opening arguments. The suspended Cornell student from Arnold, Md., is the first person brought to trial under the 1986 Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. If convicted, Morris, 24, faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Prosecutors allege Morris designed and launched on Nov. 2, 1988, a program that replicated wildly, immobilizing an estimated 6,000 computers linked to the Internet research computer network, including those at NASA and Air Force facilities. Rasch said the worm was designed to break into as many computers as possible and to copy itself over and over once it got into the system. "It was designed to hide itself to frustrate the victims of the. . attack," he said. le In his opening statements, defense attorney Thomas Guidoboni did not argue that Morris wasn't responsible for the worm program. He called its creation a "simple mistake" and "not the equivalent to a felony." "He made a critical mistake that caused the virus to duplicate much faster than he anticipated," Guidoboni said. ATTENTION The SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Top Gun bandit was sentenced Tuesday to more than seven years in federal prison for robbing three Salt lake area banks last year. U.S. District Judge David Sam said Kenneth Glen Tfane, 47, of Orem will have to serve at least five years of the sentence because the crimes involved a firearm. Trane was also sentenced to 27 months on three robbery counts and ordered to pay more than $6,500 in fines and restitution. ' Trane pleaded guilty in November to robbing the American d Credit Union, both in Savings & Loan and the Garfield Credit and the Union in Salt Lake City. Murray, He allegedly wore a cap with the words "Top Gun" on it during the robberies. During Tuesday's hearing, Trane said he was sorry for what he had done. ' "I want to apologize to all the victims," he said. "I'm very, very sorry this ever took place." Sam said he reduced the sentence on the first three counts because Trane had been cooperative in the investigation and i his prior conduct had been good. Trane faces four other robbery charges in circuit court and is scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday. Defense attorney Ron Yengich said he was pleased with the sentence and he requested that Trane be sent to a federal facility in either California or Nevada. so-call- ed Hi-Lan- ; The Deadly Vegi Dance THE TUTORING CENTER is accepting applications for Biology, Business, Engineering and History TUTORS Sponsored by ASUU to welcome you back to school winter quarter.
