Marriott, Jr., chairman of the board and president of the Marriott Corporation in Washington, D.C, will deliver the commencement address at University of Utah ceremonies Friday, June 13 in the Special Events Center. Marriott, w ho in 1985 succeeded his late father as board chairman of the multi-billidollar food and lodging be will one of four conglomerate, distinguished Utahns to receive honorary doctorate degrees during commencement exercises. In addition to Marriott, recipients include Wayne S. Brown, president of Utah Innovation Center Inc.; Ewart A. Swinyard, professor emeritus of pharmacology; and Vladimir Alexis Ussachevsky, a pioneer in the production of electronic music. Marriott, who graduated from the U. in 1954 with a degree in banking and finance, in 1956 joined the firm founded by his father. He was named president of the company in 1964 and became chief executive officer in 1972. Since he became president, the company has grown at an annual rate of 20 on percent in sales, net income, stock price and earnings per share. He was cited in Tom Peters' bestseller In Search of Excellence. Brown, a U. professor of mechanical engineering, founded the Utah Innovation Center in 1979 with a grant from the National Science Foundation and in 1982 transformed the center into a private corporation that has attracted international attention. which has of He was become a world leader in automated, computer-controlle- d Eaton-Kenwa- co-foun- y, materials handling systems. In 1964 he founded Terra Tek Inc. as a spinoff of his academic research in rock mechanics. Swinyard is a native Utahn whose teaching and research career spans five decades. The much honored scientist is widely recognized for his research in the field of convulsive disorders, especially epilepsy. Today he directs the Center for the Early Pharmacological Evaluation of Drugs, a facility unique to the United States. Anti-epilept- ic He served as dean of the U. College of Pharmacy from 1970 to 1976. Before that he was chairman of the department of biopharmaceutical sciences in the college. In 1982 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Utah Academy of Sciences. He also is the recipient of an honorary doctorate from Utah State University. Ussachevsky, who has been a professor of music and composer in residence at the U. since 1970, is one of the major forces in electronic music today. He was a founder and served as director of the Columbia-Princeto- n Electronic Music Center for more 20 than years. He envisioned and encouraged the development of several specialized electronic studio instruments and composed the first work to combine live performers with sound.
