Ririe-Woodbu- co-direct- ry er Trilogy's 4th book does not clarify in a funny way a UX) by Larry B. Tunks Staff writer As if Life, the Universe and Everything, the third book in the Hitchhiker's Trilogy, did not cover it all, along comes a fourth book in what could be the most voluminous "trilogy" every printed. British author Douglas Adams has struck again with his intergalactic heroes Ford Perfect and Arthur Dent. We find that the earth has not really been demolished by the Vogons for their hyperspacc bypass. But all the dolphins have disappeared and there arc rumors about CIA involvement in recent mass hallucinations. BOOKS If all of this does not make sense, So Long and Thanks for All the Fish, the fourth book in the series, will probably not clarify any of it, but it will not do so in a funny way. Adams has become a cult figure, and his style of writing continues to create the unexpected situations so important to comedy writing. His new book could be classified as a bunch of nonsense which only requires a sense of humor to read. But it is the best piece of nonsense to come along since, well, the first book in the series. The first book, The Hitchhiker 's Guide to the Galaxy was conceived by Adams as a radio script. It was first produced by the BBC in serial form beginning in March of 1979. The success of the scries prompted Adams to write the four books in the trilogy. The idea has since culminated in more than seven million copies of Adams books in print. The popularity of the trilogy and the original radio serial have spawned an album, several London stage shows and a PBS television series. A computer software company has developed an interpretation of the first book that lets the user play Arthur Dent. As the fourth book opens, Arthur, after seven years, is back on earth and still cannot understand why the planet has not been blown to bits. Ford Perfect is in the Old Pink Dog Bar on the other side of the universe trying to figure out how to pay a bar tab "the size of a small defense budget." The bartender so-call- ed speaks in a voice that has a "low soft purr, like the low soft purr made by the opening of an ICBM silo." Arthur has fallen in love with an earth woman. Meanwhile, Ford is trying hitch a ride back to earth, where he began his career as a writer for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The adventures that the two have, while in search for God's final message to his creatures, arc almost as indescribable as they are humorous. In fact, one of the best ways to review this book is to pick favorite passages, print them and let the writing speak for itself. The passages are fresh and free from the storyline details of the third book. It is an easy book to read, but unexpected lines jump out at unsuspecting moments. Like a bountiful feast for the funny bone, So Long and Thanks for All the Fish should be consumed (not digested) in a single night so one can read it again the next night.
