Show The Da3y Utah ChiwOde, Tmndmy, JaMuy IS, 1?SS Student says ASUU president, financier broke code by Darrea Hawkins Chronicle staff ASUU President Spencer HiU and ASUU Finance Board chairman Dan Stringham were named as defendants in a formal complaint filed Monday with the ASUU prosecutor. The complaint, signed by Assembly member Patrick Salazar, alleges the two leaders violated ASUU policies and procedures when distributing compensation checks to their cabinet members last spring. Hill and Stringham both said they have done nothing wrong. Salazar's complaint requests that the ASUU Judiciary issue a letter of reprimand to the defendants and place them on a period of disciplinary probation. Salazar says that would mean they would have to resign their offices. ASUU prosecutor Bruce Robinson says he will review the complaint carefully and get both sides to sit down and talk about it to possibly reach an agreement. If no settlement is reached, the complaint will be forwarded to the judiciary, which can decide whether or not it wants to hear the case. Salazar says he will not settle the issue outside of the judiciary. "This thing's going to court. If they would have said two or three months ago they were wrong, I would have dropped it. But they won't officially admit their guilt." Hill, however, would like to take care of the problem out of court. We definitely did no wrong. Dan Stringham is a man of irreproachable integrity and that's been exhibited in everything he's done this year. I'm confident someone is making an issue out of nothing," be said. Salazar's official complaint says Stringham and Hill violated ASUU laws by allowing an illegal number of people to receive compensation for serving on the ASUU Cabinet spring quarter. ASUU policy stipulates no more than 25 people may be compensated spring quarter. The 25 people who received compensation checks were requested to voluntarily endorse them to.a private trust fund. The money was then redistributed to about 45 cabinet members, thereby compensating an illegal number of people, according to Salazar. Stringham said Salazar's charges arc groundless because what a person docs with his money after he is paid is his own decision. M When a student voluntarily endorses his check, ASUU officers arc completely released of any responsibility," he said. The Assembly Executive Committee has already studied the issue and has cleared Hill and Stringham of any wrongdoing. Mark Gibb, vice chairman of the executive committee, said Stringham presented the whole issue to them at their October meeting in an upfront and honest manner. The members present at that meeting then voted unanimously that the two had broken no laws. Although Salazar is a member of that committee, he was not present at the session. in U.S. Demoonediscussss racism effect would Soviet Union and THOWrflOT "What he (Reagan) has done is make racism and discrimination something that has become fashionable and palatable.
