Show Shultz, Gromyko chat amid total blackout SWITZERLAND (UPI) Secretary of State George Shuhz and Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyfcoinet in an extra session Tuesday amid a near total news blackout on the superpowers' first arms talks in more than a year. The blackout was so complete that at one point, Gromyko responded to reporters by saying only: "I can confirm that I am Gromyko. Both sides refused to comment on the outcome so far of three rounds of talks aimed at finding common ground for restoring arms control negotiations, leaving the world to speculate whether the negotiators were making progress. U.S. officials said Shultz and Gromyko, each accompanied by four aides and one interpreter met in the morning for two hours and 20 minutes at the Soviet mission to the U.N. European headquarters in Geneva. A U.S. spokesman then announced an extra fourth session in the afternoon at the American mission further along the Avenue de La Paix, or Avenue of Peace. There was speculation that Shultz and Gromyko had touched on the possibility of a summit meeting between President Reagan and Soviet President Konstantin , Soviet journalists slso specubted but did not report oo the possibility of toother meeting between. Shuhz tad Gromyko in Moscow in March. A U.S. spokesmen said the two sides would issue ajoint statement at the end of their talks. But one U.S. official suggested privately that substantive details might not emerge until President Reagan holds his scheduled news conference in Washington on Wednesday evening. The only indication that progress was perhaps being made was the outwardly relaxed atmosphere during die first two rounds of talks Monday. Gromyko was taken by limousine in a small motorcade from the Soviet mission to the U.S. mission to begin the fourth meeting precisely on time at 2:30 p.m. (8:30 a.m.). Four Swiss police cars, the first occupied by four agents pointing submachine guns out of the windows, accompanied the Soviet motorcade. Reporters shivered outside the gates in icy weather. 14-degr- ee As Gromyko wss enterics the US. mission, a reporter shouted "Art you setting a dste foe die new ocgoosticss to begin?" " , Turning, Gromyko replied in his good but English, heavily-accent- ed "I can confirm that I am Gromyko. By the end of their third session, the two sides had met for a total of nine hours and 15 minutes. The Geneva talks, first announrrd on Thanksgiving Day, were aimed at restoring the superpower dialogue that was cut off Nov. 23, 1983, when the Soviet Union walked out of the Geneva INF talks on limiting intermediate-rang- e nuclear forces in Europe. The Soviet action was taken to protest the deployment of U.S. Pershing 2 and cruise missiles in Europe under a s. NATO plan to counter Soviet The Soviets also failed to resume the parallel START negotiations on the reduction of intercontinental nuclear weapons that were recessed indefinitely in December SS-20- 1983. at nfc On sale this week only at Gardner Hall 204 9 a.m.-- 4 p.m. STUDENT SEASON TICKETS PORTRAITS RDT & FRIENDS $25 1985 January 8:00 p.m. Rowland Hall-S- t.
