An address by the cnsnnxn of the oocsressiootl House Ethics Committee and a performance by a celebrated poet, author and actress will highlight the University of Utah's commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 14. The observance, titled "Martin Luther King Day: The Heritage, The Legacy, The Promise, precedes by one year the national holiday that will honor the civU rights leader and Nobel Prize winner who was assassinated in 1968. Beginning in 1936, the holiday will tall on the third Monday in January, although omi 14 Jam). During the official U. observance, Rep. Louis Stokes, U.S. congressman from Ohio, will give a keynote address at noon in the Olpin Union Ballroom. Stokes was the first black member of Congress from the state of Ohio when he was first elected in 1968. In 1982, be was to his eighth term in Congress, and now serves as chairman of the House Ethics re-elect- ed King's birthdate is Jan. 15. - Committee. He will be welcomed by U. of U. President Chase N. Peterson and introduced by Rabbi Eric Silver of the Congregation Kol Ami. The address is free and open to the public. His appearance is by ASUU. A panel discussion of King's legacy to society is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Olpin Union West Ballroom. The moderator will be Howard Ball, dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Science and a scholar-writ- er on civil rights issues. Maya Angelou, a noted poet, will be featured at a 7 p.m. concert in Kingsbury Hall along with The Faith Temple Church Choir. Angelou, who performed to a full house on campus nearly a year ago, will address the ideals for which King was noted peace and freedom, human dignity and social justice. A. red "This early observance demonstrates our commitment to Dr. King's ideals," said Martin M. Chemers, chairman of the U. department of psychology, who is directing plans for die occasion. "We feel such an observance is appropriate now. So far as is known, this is the only observance of its kind.' The Salt Lake branch of the NAACP will also sponsor a memorial luncheon for King at noon on Jan. 15 in the Wyoming Room of Little America. Rev. France A. Davis, pastor of Clavary Baptist Church in Salt Lake City, and J. D. Williams, professor of political science at the U., will speak at the luncheon.
