Draper We ; 'H XL Fireworks Safety Tips with w ind a nd lightning strikes. Fire danger is high and any unplanned human caused fire has the potential to cause loss of life, property and valuable resources. Residents using fireworks should use extreme cauHere are some tips for tion. safe use of fireworks: Use fireworks in parking lots, driveways and gravel or dirt areas. Reminder of Road by. Follow instructions carefully and use with close adult super- vision. Do not discharge fireworks from moving vehicles. Let fireworks cool, then soak them in water before disposing of debris. Use only fireworks that are legal for use in Utah. Any fireworks that leaves the ground or explodes is illegal. Remember, fireworks are ILLEGAL on all Public lands and LEGAL on all state and private lands at this time. Restrictions may be placed as conditions become worse. Closures While Recreating Road and trail closures have purpose. When the Forest Service swings a gate to close a road or a trail, there is always a purpose for that closure. Sometimes it is to prevent damage to soft roadbeds. In the spring, road surfaces become saturated with moisture. Most often they will not sustain the weight of a motorized vehicle. So roads are closed in the spring until the road bed dries out: Sometimes routes are closed to protect wildlife. Springtime is the time of the year for wildlife to foal their young and need not to and be disturbed. The routes are usually opened in during the hunts for access. In the case of the Tushar Mountains, we have closed gates on the Beaver and Marysvale sides of the mountain to prevent motorized users from doing resource damage. What has occurred in years past is riders will get near the top from one side or the other and run into a few remaining snow banks blocking the road. Rather than turn around, riders try to circumvent these drifts by leaving the trail and riding around them. Well, that creates a tremendous amount of damage on fragile alpine soils and vegetation. Such actions are not safe for ATV or Motorcycle riders. They are leaving the designated route and pioneering across steep and rocky slopes. This is a prime cause of accidents. On June 19, just such an accident occurred above Big John Flat on the Tushar Mountain. A rider attempted to pioneer a new route around a closed gate. His ATV was heavily loaded and he wasn't prepared for the slope and rough terrain he encountered. He also wasn't wearing a helmet. His ATV overturned and the gentleman was killed. Please be mindful of these seasonal closures. If the gate is closed and locked it means there is a good reason, some of which we have mentioned, as to why the Forest Service wants motorized users to stay out. This means you. Sometimes it's your safety that is the primary reason for the closure. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Management, Cut Firewood Available for the Public Senior News...
