Manderfield at one time was called Indian Creek. Indian Creek got its name when the second division of Captain Fracher's emigrant train traveling from Arkansas to California was attacked by a band of Indians, in the fall of 1857. The trouble or skirmishes between the Indians and the white settlers kept it from being settled. Ephraim Twitched moved to Indian Creek. He had a family of five sturdy sons and three daughters, all of whom helped to combat the Indian invasion. The eldest son, Anciel (a member of the Mormon Battalion), and his brother, James E, were the survivors for many years. The very first settlers found timber dose by to build their log cabins with, and the found the clear crystal water from Indian Creek sufficient for their, farming needs and soon the valley blo somed like a rose. Even though there were lots of hard times, they stayed with it and just worked that much harder. Finding the water supply not enough to water their crops, the people set about to get a reservoir. Joseph G. Manderfield, a construction engineer, came to help the people build the reservoir up Indian Creek canyon. He said he would give his services free if people would name the town, "Manderfield". Thus Manderfield. The men built the reservoir by hand with lots of hard work. The heavy, work was done with scrapers pulled by horses. About 1918-192-0 the reservoir was enlarged up the canyon. Scout Proposes to Restore Church Edgar Edwards and Jasper Puffer worked on it for two weeks at a time using four horse scrapers and put many loads of rock and soil into the dam and spillway to reinforce the sides. Moses Edwards was able to get a school house buHt by Fred Mackrell and WW Cariow. There were 14 children that started school. Anna Johnson was the first teacher, then Ethel Bennett, Marintha Edwards (Pendleton) and Laura Shepherd taught aT different times. By then there were 257 students. Jess and Lottie Hutchings rode horseback from Wildcat to attend school each morning. Winnie Edwards (Puffer) and Marintha Edwards (Pendleton) kept the school house cleaned. The school house that was built was the pretty Utile white church house that stiB stands at It served as a Manderfield. school, house for many years and for the Church building for a lot of years since the students were transferred to Beaver for school. The branch continued to grow, so the men remodeled the building and put three rooms It was whHe LaVai upstairs. Elder Bradsaw and Cadi Edwards and Thed Baldwin were the used to do repairs on the inside of the building. We hope to be able to do the needed repairs so that the building can once again be used to hold family gatherings and parties. For your information, the Church house now belongs to the Manderfield Community. Please help us to preserve the Manderfield little beautiful Church house for future genera-tion- s by donating money and or labor for the completion of this project. Continued from Page 1 pulled off of a couple of races to make sure held be ready for the big one. Ah, the Big One, the "George Marshall Stakes." The tension and emotion fills the air as the horses are saddled with extra spedal care, and brought on the race track to the song "Run for the Roses". As you look around the. crowd you can spot the owners and trainers, the solemn looks on their faces, the hopeful gleam in their eye that maybe, just maybe, today might be the day. That all the hard work and all the dreams just might come true. On the last report of this race, it was figured that Blake Marshall's double trained entry of Or' Naturl and Dance Watcher would be the ones to take it all. Kent Carter's Make It So was thought to be a dark horse that could steal it away But there was a from them. dark horse that no one, except maybe the owners because they brought in a rider that they use in Phoenix, thought had a Dave and Alton chance. Marshall's, Look for a Star, broke out slightly behind the ' pack but gained a quick lead and never looked back. She The truly was their star. favorites, well Bob Crane's ' Dance Watcher took second, Kent Carter's Make It So was third, and Jeff Marshall's Or' Naturl was fourth. Gates Nowers and Rodney Bradshaw took fifth with Fergusondesert Jim Prince's Quacked was sixth, Dee Pepper Mackleprang and Cedar Boy came in seventh and Dave and Alton's other entry, Shintangle, brought up the rear. Now Miss Piggy had been around aH day and found her rightful owner as soon as the George MarshaB was over. The raffle fWy, Lucky Robbery, also found who she belonged to. Kris Sandgren was drawn out as the "kicky" owner. Oh yes, the mule race. I dont know which is more fun to watch, the riders or the mules. Wade 'Gale took an easy first, Kid, with DaHen Bradshaw, (It must be in his blood) took second and Chad WKiiams with his usual show of sportsmanship settled for third. To round out the day the dosing race was the Ely Prep. This seems fitting as most of the horses wiN now be going to Ely for their next races. This race was made up of older horses, the true campaingeri. Bob and Irene Carter's Coulee Day walked away with the plague, while Wade Marshal's trained entry, Magical Dreamer came in second. If you didn't come to the races this year you missed some enjoyable days. Think about It this winter, when It's cold and the snows flying.
