' ''r' m'mmmmmmmmmmmm VOLUME 91 NUMBER 29 BEAVER, an Historical Park adold Beaver County the to jacent Courthouse has been in discussion for at least 4 years. Phase I will be completed on July 24th. New sod has been planted and sidewalks poured along with colorful patchworks of flowers has been completed. A bronze statue of Philo T. Farnsworth was made available to Beaver and will be dedicated at 7:00 P.M. on July 24th. This 1st phase was completed with the cooperative efforts of Beaver County, Beaver City and the Beaver County Travel Council. The proposed 2nd phase will be the placement of a replica of Philo's birthplace in Beaver. A log cabin to be used as a visitor's center and a T.V. Museum. The 3rd phase will be additional monuments of events that contributed to the history of the area, whether famous or infamous. Tentatively being, the trials of John D. Lee, the Honorable Abe Murdock, a Beaver native who served eight years in the National House of Representatives and six years in the United States Senate and Butch Cassidy, a native born, who till this day is still a controversial character. The latest rumor circulating is that Butch Cassidy lived until this year. It is with pride, for Beaver, the first statue will be the "Father of Television", Philo T. Farnsworth. After the dedication at 7:00 P.M., a play of his life, written by Carol Smith from the context of the book "Distant Vision" will be shown at the Old Courthouse. Distant Vision was written by Edna Gardner Farnsworth, his wife. Several characters in the play will be portrayed by distant relatives of the inventor. The book "Distant Vision" was given to Beaver Library by Dan Joseph, family member acting on behalf of the author. The play, as the book, promises to be an insight into a very determined, intelligent person, with futuristic ideas, he not only made plausible but productive. The Farnsworth family reunion will be held in Beaver in conjunction with the July 24th activities and numbers 65 members this year. Beaver Historical Park, will be a place where visitors can stop, rest a bit and learn of the history of the Beaver area. Perhaps take a tour of the "Old Courthouse Museum" and think of the "trials" that were held there. Each of our parks has a unique heritage planned by people of today, working to preserve the past and enhance the future. Beaver Historical Park can only be enhanced in the future, starting from a great beginning. Thanks from a grateful town to the Historical Park committee: Director Betty Miller, Paul Anderson, Leo Kanell, Clair Lee, Linda Robinson and Dell Hollingshead. Mrs. Philo T. By Sam Cox Cartwright, Beaver City Police Department, has issued a warning to local parents stressing the importance of being aware of the water that flows through the new pressurized irrigation system. The water locks, or holding ponds, that release the water for the new system are untreated and are subject to the same processes of vegetation, and bacterial growth as any stagnant water. All Clowns 438-265- No Parking On Main Street t's Lions Club Recycling By Quig Nielsen Five dollars per half ounce to send a letter from New York to San ' Francisco! That was the charge to carry a letter across the continent. In 1859 a trio of St. Louis businessmen conceived the idea of running a pony' express across the country by solitary horsemen. The history-makin- g operation began in 1860 with each horseman carrying 15 pounds of letters. Stations were located about 24 miles apart and each rider, at the rate of eight miles an hour, spanned three stations as his day's ride.. Letters mailed in New York would now arrive in San Francisco in 13 days. When Fort Sumter was fired upon, starting the Civil War, the news came to Salt Lake City via pony express in seven days, and San Francisco learned of the war's beginning within nine days. These fearless riders "Covered their routes regardless of snows and storms, or savages and beasts the of prey, yet not without sacrifice of life." Riding alone there were occasions when the rider was chased by savages. Bancroft in his History of California writes "The high charges prevented the line from being profitably patronized; it seldom carried over 200 letters, and at times less than 20; the best pay came from a mail contract." "With the completion of the overland telegraph in (Nov.) 1861, the pony express was practically abandoned." In Utah, the pony express was popular with many young Mormons who proved to be. "among the most successful and fearless riders. It brought Washington and foreign news much quicker than in the days of the 'ox train telegraphs.'" Even though its tenure was short, a Pony Express Club was organized in Salt Lake City with Brigham Young as its head. 5K River Run July Game Beaver vs Richfield Beaver was beaten by Taylorsville Saturday and by Orem on Tuesday to close out their season.
