S. Department of Agriculture to carry out the purposes of the Farm Tenant Act were announced today by Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace. The Farm Tenant Act authorizes the Secretary of Agriculture to lend money to farm tenants in order to help them become farm owners, to make rehabilitation loans to farmers for substance, improvement, and other purposes, and to develop a program of land utilization, including the re tirement of submarginal land. Secretary Wallace today announced that he had assigned responsibility for the first two purposes tenant loans, and rehabilitation loans to the Farm Security Administration, which as of September 1 will be the official name of the Resettlement Administration. air. waiiace explained that the resettlement and construction projects of the Resettlement Administration were rapidly nearing completion, and that the major activities of the agency in the future could not accurately be described by the word "resettlement." Will W. Alexander. Administrator of the Resettlement Administration, will serve as Administrator of the Farm Secunty Administration, it was announced by Secretary Wallace. Responsibility for the development of a program of land utilization and retirement of submarginal land, the Secretary stated, has been assigned as of September 1 to the Bureau of Agricultural Economics. Dr. L. C. Gray, until now Assistant Administrator of the Resettlement Administration in charge of land utilization, has been named by A. G. Black. Chief of! the Bureau of Agricultural Economics to me new post of Assistant Chief in . cnarge of land utilization. Secretary Wallace today also announced the appointment of the board or Directors of the Farmers' Home! corporation, as provided for in Title IV of the Farm Tenant Act. Harry L. Brown, Assistant Secretary of Agriculture, A. G. Black, Chief of the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, and Will W. Growers can now grow beets and feel assured as in years past that the factors of profitable beet growing are in their control; namely, land preparation, and cultural care. This year the acreage is 25 more than in 1936 and the tonnage will be about 15 tons ner acre aver age, which is one of the best in the country.
